2074 awoke in darkness. That, in itself, was odd. In the two years he had been here, never once had the lights in his cell gone out. He rolled over onto his side, straining his eyes into the darkness. A dim glow came from through the open door. Now that was really strange. He wasn't allowed out without a Handler, ever.

Sitting up, he walked cautiously out into the corridor. The glow was coming from an emergency light near the stairs. He looked the opposite direction. There was something laying on the floor, a few metres in the other direction. He walked silently towards it, his movements smooth from over a decade of learning to hide in plain sight. His ability helped a lot with that. As he approached the thing on the floor, he began to recognise it as human. A sick feeling of dread crawled in the pit of his stomach. As he crouched down next to it, he recognised it as Zane. He tasted bile in his mouth as he averted his eyes from the Handlers face. He had never liked Zane, but to see him laying limply, laying broken-

He needed to decide what to do. As tempted as he was to just leave him here, take the key to his collar and dissapear, he couldn't. His conscience wouldn't allow him. Picking up the body, he slung it over his shoulders, holding his arms and legs on either side, and walked quickly towards the stairwell, not daring to hesitate, not even for a second. Whatever did this to Zane, it could do the same to him.

A low growl came from the hallway just behind the man, and two deep yellow eyes shone brightly as the monster approached. In the low red light, its massive jagged beak gleamed and its long tentacle like arms reached forward. In all the monster had the appearance of a large squid, though the numbers of useless legs dangling from its underside promoted that it was strictly able to live on land. Hooked claws hung from its out stretched arms, gripping the ground as it crawled forward towards the man and its last meal. Raising its head some the beak opened and a long muscled tongue shot out towards the man and the body. The deep howl of the animal filled the hall, though soon changed to a howl of pain as a rod sprouted from its eye.
"Go! I'll hold him off, you just go!" It was a young man's voice as he sprinted forward, his hands and eyes glowing in a brilliant blue color. Down his right side his number read 1738, though it was hard to tell through the dying light and the pace he was moving. "I'll buy you some time just go!" Again the monster cried out as another rod of blue light shot up from the ground and stabbed into it's eyes.
