The forums are a place where players can chat, advertise sales, organize games and contests, write, roleplay, draw, sell, and display their art, etc!
It's also used for official info from Krin & Faiona. When any major updates or events happen on the site, you will be pinged by Krin to a forum post he created. Faiona often hosts forum games during festivals and other holidays here on the site (for example, during Fall Fest, there was a pumpkin carving contest, as well as other things like a word search, create-a-3-vis-spooky-pet, etc).

I have created a Guide To The Forums that has a detailed explanation of each section of the forum and where to post what.
I know Slytherin7 already answered the question, but consider this further reading.
