To ping a user you need to put their username in the 'Ping Users' bar, not in the context of the post. Also, if you just want to ask Krin a question you might want to pm him or send him an email. That's an admin specific request not something that should be in the forums. You don't want to be posting your birthday publicly.

Short story for you: my older sister plays, QueenOfThorns. She signed up years ago, but at the time she never used any real info about herself online. That means she just put in a random birthday. So eventually Queen wanted to change her user, but she needed her birthdate... which she never bothered to write down what she used. So she PMed Krin about it. According to her, he seemed fine with her explanation of why her birthday was wrong, and he had her send an email to Sylestias support address with her real one and he fixed it from there.
So yeah, she got hers changed fine. I can ping Queen here and she can explain more what she did if you need, but you should just be able to PM Krin and he can fix it.
