One of the benefits of friends is in the hatchery. You'll find there is an option to nurture your and your friends' sylesties exclusively. This results in mutual beneficial interaction between the two of you.
That's all I've picked up on thus far as I am relatively new as well.

Friends are also good if both of you enter a breeding pact. ( you share pets and breed to eachother for free)
