The Joy of Designing: Round Three - Voting
Ends the 3rd at 11:59pm

Edit: Voting closes now on June 3rd so everyone has more time to enjoy the fest before the next round releases. (: Happy Springfest all!

Workshop Three: In creation!

Voting

Everyone will receive 3 votes. You may vote for three different design sets - not individual designs. You may not put all three votes on one set, but you may elect to vote for less than 3. Feel free to leave comments for our designers about what you liked about their design and constructive criticism about what you would have liked to have seen done differently. All applicants are allowed to vote, but! You may not vote for your own design. I will know who's design belongs to who - so no sneaky stuff. :P YOU MAY NOT CHANGE YOUR VOTE IF YOU'VE ALREADY VOTED - there will be no edits allowed. Please do not reveal your designs to anyone until voting is over! Revealing your designs or getting your friends to vote for your design set will result in an automatic elimination. This means don't submit these designs in other contest and please don't submit them publicly on the generator! Please let me know if you'd like to be pinged for the voting threads! Please take the time to read each round's theme so you know the objective for each design.

Recommended: I recognize there is a lot to go through here, I ask you please pick out those you are drawn to, then look at all their information and references more in depth to make your decisions. (:

Round Three Theme - Literature

This round is the opposite of the last round. You will not have picture references available to you. Instead, you must use literature and your imagination as your guide in the creation of your designs. Perhaps these designs seem redundant, however, they are designed to push the boundaries of your imagination in different ways. One is going to focus on imaginative landscapes, one on characters, and lastly something that represents a theme at work at the heart of literature. I will post a list of potential poems, books, and themes below to help any of those who might struggle to find one. If you need help with this design, please keep in mind I am happy to help give feedback and advice as long as you submit up to one day before the deadline of May 20th! Please use different species for each design set!

Design Set 1 - For this design set, I ask you create an identical design pair based on a character, human or creature, featured in poetry or literature - I only ask that the contents of the work be kept Sylestia friendly! Please include a link to the poem, a small excerpt you based your design off of, or title of the work if you used the whole piece of literature to create your design when you submit.

Design Set 2 - For this design set, I ask you create an identical design pair based on a setting featured in poetry or literature - I only ask that the contents of the work be kept Sylestia friendly! Please include a link to the poem, a small excerpt you based your design off of, or title of the work if you used the whole piece of literature to create your design when you submit.

Design Set 3 - For this design set, I ask you select a popular theme or archetype found in poetry or literature - again being Sylestia friendly - and create a pair based off of it. This pair does not have to be identical in design or species!

I can't wait to see what you all come up with! Because this is posted early, you get two weeks to work, however, there is the possibility of being eliminated in round two's voting round - so please keep this is mind!

Entry #1

Design 1:
Cress Qitari
My first design is based off the eponymous main character of Cress. I chose to create the design around her personality as well as her looks. It is a qitari design because Cress has long hair (that reaches past the floor) and so I wanted to use the Luxurious Locks trait. She is also both very imaginative and wishful, and daydreams often, so I used colors that fit with dreams, wishes, imagination, etc.

Design 2:
Haunted Wood Zolnixi
Excerpts (from Anne of Green Gables): "The spruce grove [is] so gloomy. [...] There's a [ghost] [that] walks along the brook just about this time of the night and wrings her hands and utters wailing cries. She appears when there is to be a death in the family. And the ghost of a little murdered child haunts the corner up by Idlewild; it creeps up behind you and lays its cold fingers on your hand. [...] I'd be sure that white things [ghosts] would reach out from behind the trees."
Excerpt 2: The [ghosts] lurked in every shadow about her, reaching out their cold, fleshless hands to grasp the terrified small girl who had called them into being. [...] The swoop of bats in the darkness over her was as the wings of unearthly creatures.
A setting half-imagined by the main character

Design 3:
Hopes, Dreams and Wishes Lunemara and Kelpari
I opted to make two very different designs for the same theme because I wanted to convey that hopes, dreams, and wishes can be very different depending on the person.

Entry #2

Design 1:
Little House Plant Aeridini
Shel Silverstein
Goodnight little houseplant asleep on the sill
I'll pull the shades so you don't catch a chill
And tomorrow in the morning don't be breaskfast for two
We'll have ham and eggs for me and nitrogen for you
Goodnight little houseplant tucked in your clay pot
Maske sure you don't catch Huntington's Rot
Remember little houseplant stay away from them bees
I've heard they may carry a social disease
Goodnight little houseplant goodnight
Here's your glass of water should I leave on the light
Tomorrow we'll talk of the things that we did
I love you little house plant who needs women and kids

Design 2:
Gardens of Narnia Lighira

Design 3:
Fate and Free Will
Fate I did with a Cosmo design because space and stars are often tied into fates.Free Will I wanted to make something that incorporated the rainbow features well, in my opinion a hard trait to work with ... but rainbows are a sign of free will.

Entry #3

Design 1:
To This Day Lighira

Shane Koyzcan
The red represents the TNT and the pale gray represents the sky falling and the color of pills. The gray and blue represent the melancholy feeling in the poem excerpt. The ball and chain show the trapped feeling the poem shows as well.

Design 2:
The Woods of the Darkest Part of the Forest Kelpari
Holly Black
The woods are where the magical creatures and faeries live so this design is representing the magic in the woods.

Design 3:
Longing

Entry #4

Design 1:
Dorthy Bulbori

Design 2:
The Emerald City Luffox

Design 3:
Faith versus Doubt
Faith is all bright white, gold, and blue. Doubt is the faded and tarnished version of Faith. Not an absence of faith, but a slow loss of it.

Entry #5

Design 1:
Tinkerbell Ferrikki
For this designs set I decided to choose Tinkerbell from the childhood classic, Peter Pan. I really wanted to do something that many people would have a connection to so I went for this little puffball.

Design 2:
Northern Lights Griffi
Northern Lights is a novel written by Philip Pullman. It takes place in a world where one's spirit rest actively outside one's body as an animal known as dmons. In this novel the northern lights play a HUGE role in the advancement of the story, main issue at hand, and eventually the arising problem leading into the second book. I know our last design topic covered the Northern Lights, I just simply couldn't resist.

Design 3:
Envy Out of Pride
This one requires a bit of explaining. In many sets of literature we see envy being born in the wake on one's pride. It is an emotion that seizes the mind upon seeing the success of others and by believing you should be fairing better than the other. Envy is a sour, evil, and negative emotion while Pride is more of a noble and powerful emotion.

Entry #6

Design 1:
Albatross Griffi
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Design 2:
Lothlorien Faelora
"There are no trees like the trees of that land. For in the autumn their leaves fall not, but turn to gold. Not till the spring comes and the new green opens do they fall, and then the boughs are laden with yellow flowers; and the floor of the wood is golden, and golden is the roof, and its pillars are of silver, for the bark of the trees is smooth and grey." (Legolas from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings)

Design 3:

Entry #7

Design 1:
I Am the Autumnal Sun Vulnyx
Henry D. Thoreau

Design 2:
To A Star Kelpari
Percy Bysshe Shelley

Design 3:
Theme of Forgiveness vs. Revenge

Entry #8

Design 1:
Frankenstein Lupora - Description of the monster
Mary Shelley

Design 2:
The Setting of the Raven
Edgar Allen Poe

Design 3:
Faith vs Doubt

Entry #9

Design 1:
Balrog Ny'Vene (Lord of the Rings)
The Balrog reached the bridge. Gandalf stood in the middle of the span, leaning on the staff in his left hand, but in his other hand Glamdring gleamed, cold and white. His enemy halted again, facing him, and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings. It raised the whip, and the thongs whined and cracked. Fire came from its nostrils. But Gandalf stood firm.

'You cannot pass,' he said. The orcs stood still, and a dead silence fell. 'I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. You cannot pass. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udn. Go back to the Shadow! You cannot pass.'

Design 2:
Yellow Brick Road Lighira (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz)

Design 3:
Love Conquers All Nephini

Entry #10

Design 1:
Panserbjrn Morkko
From the series His Dark Martials: Also known as an Armored Bear, Panserbjrn are basically sentient polar bears with opposable thumbs. Their armor which they forge from sky-iron is the equivalent of their soul and is worn at all times.

Design 2:
With My Fancy I Grasped Kelpari

Design 3:
Dark vs Light

Entry #11

Design 1:
The Little Prince Ryori
Antoine de Saint-Exupry
"People where you live, the little prince said, grow five thousand roses in one garden... Yet they don't find what they're looking for... And yet what they're looking for could be found in a single rose."

(Roses in the design to reflect the running theme in the novella, and astral wanderer traits to reflect the Prince's journey through space.)

Design 2:
The Road Not Taken Zolnixi
Yellows for the "yellow wood" and twisted roots to symbolise the road less travelled, and lucky dust to symbolise the luck at that having made all the difference

Design 3:
Duality (Good vs. Evil)
I wanted to create a design using similar traits and species to show that duality, in this case good and evil, is closer than one might think - two sides of the same coin.

Entry #12

Design 1:
The Black Dog of Treasure Island
"He was a pale tallowy creature, wanting two fingers of the left hand, and although he wore a cutlass, he did not look much like a fighter. I had always my eye open for seafaring men, with one leg or two, and I remember this one puzzled me. He was not sailorly, and yet he had a smack of the sea about him too."

Design 2:
On the banks of the Salinas River - Of Mice and Men
"A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green. The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool. On one side of the river the golden foothill slopes curve up to the strong and rocky Gabilan Mountains, but on the valley side the water is lined with trees- willows fresh and green with every spring, carrying in their lower leaf junctures the debris of the winter's flooding; and sycamores with mottled, white, recumbent limbs and branches that arch over the pool. On the sandy bank under the trees the leaves lie deep and so crisp that a lizard makes a great skittering if he runs among them. Rabbits come out of the brush to sit on the sand in the evening, and the damp flats are covered with the night tracks of 'coons, and with the spread pads of dogs from the ranches, and with the split-wedge tracks of deer that come to drink in the dark."

Design 3:
In some pieces of literature, there are characters who portray the passive/active personalities, similar to yin and yang ideas
