I find it hard to get on for the SE events since they're at 11:00pm and during school for me, so I want to know how you get the avatar items so I can concentrate my efforts.

You can get solar eclipse avatar items from fighting the solar eclipse acolytes that appear during the events. They are pretty rare drops though.
If you can't find the items, you can probably buy them from other players on the trade broker, or ask around in the item forum.
