Hi! This is incredibly strange, but I want to enter a dress up contest and I'm not entirely sure how. I went into my Wardrobe but I cannot customize my avatar with whatever Item I want. Could anyone help? Thanks!

You have to find/buy/trade to get all those Avatar things(If you want to keep them that is).
What I normally do Is use the Items as a preview (by clicking the little spy glass in the bottom right corner of the items box).
Id Take a screen shot of my Avatar when Im satisfied with it.
Then load it to a online source (I use Imgur.com)
And post that online pick in the comment section

To dress your avatar in items you don't have, click the magnifying glass in the bottom right corner of their image in the wardrobe.

Once you've dressed up in the way you want to share, copy the wardrobe avatar's image url (eg. Right mouse button > Copy Image URL / drag the image to a new tab and grab the image code from the url bar)

Go to the post you want to put it into

Click the IMG button and paste the code

so the avatar url will look like this (using our avatar with some items we don't own on it as an example):
