Can someone explain how they work, please? Do they only show up if the pet is bred? Thank you.

So, hidden traits are mainly beneficial/disruptive during breeding. Basically a visible trait is shown as AA whereas a carried trait is shown as aa BUT a hidden trait would be shown as AB. This means that (when bred) there is a possibility that a visible trait BB could show up instead of AA. :) Hopefully this made some sense xD

To add on to what Ember was saying, on Sylestia we have three ways of talking about traits: Visible, Carried, and Hidden.

Carried traits are not seen at all. This pet is an example of a pet with carried traits:

She has carried traits in the mutation 1 and mutation 3 slots. They show up in her image url as NC and NA (N is code for nothing in this case)

Visible traits are what you can see on a pet. This pet has just visible traits:

She has visible traits in the Mutation 1 and Mutation 2 slots. They show in her image url as DD and CC.

Hidden traits, however, are traits that are 'hidden' under visible traits. This pet has a hidden trait:

He has a visible trait in the Gene 2 slot, but there is a second Gene 2 trait hidden underneath. His image url shows this as CD. So visually he looks like he has CC in G2, but his offspring could inherit either a C or a D from him. (Each offspring receives one 'letter' from each parent from each slot.)

Hope that helps a little more ^.^

And just to add on, hidden traits can't be seen unless the pet is genetically tested, but they can still be passed on to offspring.
