"And make sure you have everything you need. Double check on the train. And make sure you spend lots of time with your aunt when you get lonely. Daphne has expressed to me how utterly excited she is! Oh, and Scorpius, don't let anyone be mean to you. You know the hexes to zap their bums. Make sure you have lots of sunscreen. And-"

Scorpius gave his mother an exhausted look. "Mum, can you tone down the anxiety a bit maybe?" he inquired wearily. He was already anxious himself for his first day at Hogwarts. His mother's fretting was not helping in the slightest, and he had no intentions of spending 'lots of time' with his aunt.

Astoria Malfoy sighed and pulled him into a tight hug. "I'm just worried, is all. You know how I am when I worry," she murmured, stroking his pale hair. Scorpius sighed and hugged her back, his face flooding with beet-red color. He glanced at his father and mouthed 'help me'.

With a light chuckle, Draco put a hand on Scorpius' shoulder. "He'll be fine, Astoria. He's a Malfoy."

Scorpius stared out at the busy station, people crowding, shouting, and crying all over. He was going to be fine. He was a Malfoy.

---

There was so many people. They were all over, radiating their body heat. Choking each other. Choking themselves. Choking her. Taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly, Rose raised her chin. She remembered her mother's advice. 'Keep your head high, and remember that it's only you.' A burning feeling crept up the back of her neck, and Rose turned back to her family, trying to ignore the horde of witches, wizards, and muggles surrounding them.

She grinned at one of her father's many jokes. Not all of his jests were funny, but some, she had to admit, were. It was already pressure enough that she was the daughter of two of the members of the Golden Trio. Harry Potter's two best friends. That Harry Potter was her uncle.

To her and Hugo, the trio were nothing more than family. They really weren't the cool blokes they were made out to be. But, to others... Children grew up hearing the stories of the great Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger-Weasley. All they had accomplished. All they had done.

Most of the adults' words floated through her head without her recognizing they were speaking, though. The crowd was diminishing a bit. Some of the heat whooshed out of Rose and she found her airway opened again.

She turned to Albus with a grin, now out of her mini-attack. She had been warned of it, and she had prepared for it. She linked her arm with her cousin's smugly. "Ready to be in Gryffindor? Nevermind what that prat James said," she insisted warmly, trying to ease his nerves.

"Dad, you can leave now," said Thea as she trailed along next to her father. Her inquisitive eyes scanned the platform, looking for any sign of 'magic folk'. She didn't see anything yet, but they had arrived quite late because her mother had very nearly not let them leave the house.

"Not until you're on the train, Dory" her father, Dudley Dursley, stated simply, gripping his daughter's hand tighter. This summer had been one of the strangest he had ever experienced, and he still couldn't believe he was actually here, about ready to put his daughter, Dorothea, on the Hogwarts Express.

"Ugh, dad!" Thea exclaimed, "I've told you to call me Thea! Besides, I'll be just fine on my own." She knew it was a losing battle. Her father wasn't the brightest of men, but he had been bound and determined to see her through this. Their trip to Diagon Alley had been...an experience. She had to ditch him...

"Dad, I think its this way." She pointed in the direction opposite of Platform 9 and 3/4. Her father took the bait as she knew he would, muttering curses under his breath as he turned around and began to stride in the other direction. He let Thea's hand slip out of his grip for a moment and she quickly took the opportunity to grab hold of her cart and start sprinting in the correct direction.

She could hear her father begin shouting behind her, as well as a few shouts from station employees, but she soon left them behind. She slowed down as she reached the platform, trying to look as casual as possible and pushed her way through the wall. Despite knowing that she wouldn't crash, her heartbeat sped up as she approached the barrier, and kept pounding even after she had made it to the other side.

The Express was a sight to behold and Thea got a little dizzy trying to take in as many details as she posibly could, but her time was short. Parents were hurrying their children onto the train and conductors were quickly loading the last of the trunks into the cargo compartment. Moving as quickly as she could through the crowd she moved her cart into place to have her stuff loaded onto the train and then ran to get through an open door into a passenger car. She felt a twinge of guilt as she watched teary goodbyes happening on the platform .She would send her dad a letter as soon as she reached the castle.

As Scorpius headed with his luggage towards the Hogwarts train, he felt a pang in his chest as he heard one of his mother's coughing fits. They were slowly becoming more common, though she insisted it was just a cold. His father had confided in him that it might be something more. It might be something bad.

Actually, Scorpius' father confided in him for a lot of things. He knew all the rumors about his dad, but he was extremely close with him regardless. His dad was a good person who had been forced to make some wrong choices, is all. He was closer to his father than anyone else in his family, not that he had a very wide range of family to begin with.

He reached the train fairly quickly, carrying his own luggage on. He was just barely lucky enough to catch an empty compartment, breathing out a relieved sigh as he pushed his trunk on top of the seats, in the storage area.

His mothers warnings swam through his head as he sat near the window, gazing out at all the people still on the platform. He noticed the Potters and Weasleys and quickly glanced away. Everything was going to be fine. Perfectly fine.

---

"C'mon, Albus," Rose tugged at her cousin's arm, hoisting her heavy trunk up with one strong arm. She had her father's natural strength. Both a blessing and a curse, really. She guided her cousin towards the train confidently, feeling much better now that the crowd of people had died down so majorly.

She could hear her mother calling to her as she entered the train. "Be safe!" And her father's shout. "Gryffindor, or disowned!" And then, of course, her mother's retaliation. "Ronald!"

Rose couldn't help a smile that spread on her face at her parents' bickering. They always bickered, but it was always more relaxed debates than heated arguments. Though, admittedly, she did feel a twinge of anxiety. What if she wasn't in Gryffindor and her father actually did disown her?

She shook her head slightly at the thought, trying to clear her mind. Best not to concern herself with that. After all, with how much she took after her father, she was bound to be in Gryffindor, right? "I doubt there will be any empty compartments left, though, thanks to Dad wasting time," she muttered halfheartedly to Albus as she pulled her trunk through the narrow passageway.

As Thea began to wander the corridors of the train, looking for a place to sit, her mind kept drifting back to thoughts of her dad. Poor guys was probably still standing at King's Cross trying to find the hidden door, except he probably couldn't even remember the number, and it wasn't as though he could just stop and ask someone. She grimaced slightly as the feeling of guilt took hold of her. She shouldn't have left him. He was so terribly hopeless when he was by himself...

"Ugh!" Thea grunted to herself, giving her head a firm shake. No, her father would be just fine, she shouldn't have to worry about him. He was an adult after all. It was time to worry about where she was going to sit.

She finally found a compartment that was mostly empty. There was an older student that was fast asleep. Thea squeezed through the door and shut it carefully before plopping down next to the window. As she sat down she finally let the reality wash over her, her face a blank mask as she processed everything that had happened. She had been accepted to a school to witches and wizards, she had a magic wand in the pocket of her jacket, and she was sitting on a train with other young witches and wizards.

It made so much sense now. Ever since her father had shown her the letter and explained what it meant, Thea hadn't felt like such a freak. Funny how being told you were different could have that effect. The strange things that had happened around her, all the odd happenings, had simply been her magic developing. She and her father had agreed it was best not to tell her mother or older brother, Griffith. All through preparing to head to school she had tried to get her dad to tel her how he seemed to know so much about this, despite not having magic himself. He refused to tell her. She hated that...

-----

Albus was quite excited about starting at Hogwarts. Not that you could tell looking at him, of course. His face held an aloof, lazy expression as he took in the crowds milling about on the platform. His mother was fussing over James, his older brother, and his little sister was bouncing around trying spy any of their other family members. She squealed, indicating she had seen Uncle Ron and Aunt Hermione.

He didn't say much as the two families greeted one another, he didn't need to. James talked enough for five people. Albus smiled politely at Rose, who was his favorite cousin, and that was saying a lot because he had a great many cousins. He allowed his mother and father to hug him, promising that yes he would be good, and yes he would send them owls every week. When Rose put her arm through his and tugged him onto the train, he went without protest, allowing himself to be led through the corridor.

"Well," he said, scratching his nose absently, "We better start looking then."

Although Scorpius had been lucky enough to score his own cabin, he knew that the chances it would remain only his were very slim. Each time he saw a shadow pass by through the blinds, his nerves went into overdrive and he worried that someone was going to enter. He wasn't the most social person, if he was being perfectly honest with himself.

He sat next to the window, tensed up as he tried to focus solely on the book in his lap. It was Hogwarts, A History. His father didn't quite understand his obsession with reading or getting top marks, said it reminded him of someone he used to know, but supported him regardless. He was more akin to his mother in that regards.

As the door to his compartment opened, he jumped nearly a foot in the air. Four burly-looking 5th years crowded in, one of them grabbing Scorpius' luggage and tossing it out of the compartment, where his trunk broke open and spilled some of its contents. "Hey!" Scorpius exclaimed. "Th-this compartment was mine!" he tried, but his voice quivered way too much for him to seem all that intimidating. He didn't want to fight, anyway.

One of the fifth years grinned at him. "And now it's ours. Get outta here, shrimp," he sneered. Not thinking twice about it, Scorpius exited the cabin as quickly as he could, his knuckles white clutching his book. Aware of all of the eyes on him and the fact that he was trembling, he knelt down and began gathering his belongings.

With everything that was going on around her being so new and (literally) magical, Thea should have been nervous. Instead of sitting there shaking with nerves, however, she simply surveyed her surroundings and absorbed everything she say with a neutral expression. She saw a few colorful flashes of light in the hallway, which she assumed were spells. She longed to pull her wand out and try some magic, but she wanted to wait until she had been shown how to use it properly

A couple times other students had tried to enter the compartment to sit with her, but as soon as they looked at her they tended to scurry off rather quickly. She wasn't trying to scare them off, unfortunately her face just naturally settled into a scowl when first meeting people. Even the older student who had been in the compartment with her at first had woken up and decided he was better off elsewhere. At any rate, she preferred the solitude to think and watch the countryside fly by. It was rather peaceful. Until...

There was a loud thumb in the hallway, causing Thea's face to dart in that direction and her muscles tense for action. She heard the voices of some older students and the thin, quavery voice of someone younger. She knew right away what was going on and pushed herself out of her seat, stomping over to the door and opening it with a downright dangerous look on her face. There was no sign of the older students any longer, though there were a number of others standing around staring at the small boy trying to hurriedly gather his belongs on the floor.

"Bugger off!" she shouted at them, giving everyone staring a disgusted, murderous look. Most were quick to take off. When they had gone, Thea bent down and helped the boy collect the rest of his things, not saying a word to him the whole time.

"C'mon," she said simply to him when they were finished, and began to walk back to her compartment. She was not much of a social person, but the other boy would be much better off sitting with her at this point.

Scorpius stared in shock at the girl who, with two words, scared most of the hallway lingerers back into their compartments and then proceeded to help him without even knowing him. His gaze followed her over to her compartment, and he debated fleeing for a moment.

No, he told himself. No fleeing. You're a Malfoy, and Malfoys don't flee. Especially not from girls. With a sigh, he stood up and gathered his trunk, trying to ignore his heart racing. He lifted his chin in mock confidence and trailed after the girl to the cabin. He was fairly certain that was an invitation to sit with her, but she didn't really say much, and honestly, she was a little scary.

Scorpius forced himself to calm down a little bit as he entered the compartment and closed it behind him. "Uh, thank you..." he muttered shamefully, trying to hide his red face as he pushed his trunk up above his seat. He was seated across from her, squishing himself into the little corner.

"I'm not much of a fighter," he gave a weak attempt at covering up for his wimpy reactions, and the fact that he had to get saved by a girl.

The concept of bullying was one that Thea was well familiar with. She had been bullied since her first day of school. Her size, her close set eyes, her lank blonde hair that always wanted to frizz enough to look unkempt, all of it was fodder for her schoolmates. As she got older her size began to work in her favor, but not in a way she was happy about. The other kids treated her as though she were the bully, with her always present scowl and her antisocial ways. They stayed far away from her, meaning she had never really had any friends.

She despised bullies, and had the older students who had tormented the smaller boy on the train been around she would have given them a serious piece of her eleven year old mind. She walked back to her compartment, which had been left empty while she was out, listening as the other boy followed her. She sat down where she'd been sitting before and began to go back to staring out the window.

When the boy began to speak to her, to thank her, she turn her eyes on him with a blank look. Yes, she had helped him, but she hadn't expected him to want to chat. This was unfamiliar territory for Thea, and her brown furrowed as she tried to puzzle out what to do. Clearly the normal thing would be to speak back to him. She chewed her lip for a moment, mulling words over in her mind, when he spoke again, and then the unthinkable happened...

"Ha!" she laughed, the sound escaping her before she she could stop herself. She quickly covered her mouth, feeling her cheeks getting warm, and her scowl deepened at the reaction. What was this nonsense? She took her hand from her face and sat up a little straighter. "Yes, I'd noticed."

Not much, but certainly more than nearly anyone had ever gotten from her before...

The awkward silence hung in the compartment for a bit after the girl's laughter and speaking. Scorpius didn't feel any better for it. He shifted uncomfortably on the seat, turning his grey gaze out the window. Perhaps she didn't recognize him. Likely a muggleborn, since most purebloods and halfbloods knew the face of Draco Malfoy, and Scorpius was nearly a spitting image of him.

He felt slightly relieved by the fact that she most likely didn't recognize him. He wanted a clean slate at Hogwarts, clean from his father's past mistakes. He knew he was guaranteed to be in Slytherin. He was proud to be so. Slytherin and proud.

The silence getting to him, Scorpius sighed and broke the silence. "Scorpius Malfoy," he introduced himself to her, staring undauntedly into her face. She was very standoffish.

It was comforting that the name Malfoy probably meant nothing to her, unless she was really brushed up on her history. Although Scorpius knew that his father was really a good person who was forced to make some hard choices, and chose wrong, but the history books would most definitely not portray him in the same way.
