So, while I was trying to message someone about how my day went, and how yesterday I was woken up at 4 AM by a Picoides Pubescens [Latin Term, Aka : Downy Woodpecker], I ran into the issue of words being *'ed out... probably as they have on this post, even though the *'ed words were used to describe a wood boring bird, and not something obscene. Is there a way to refine the word filter to avoid butchering unobscene words like breeds of north american birds, and other unobscenities?

It's almost like the word filter on a Minecraft Tekkit Lite server I played on, were you'd get reported and banned for saying BISCUIT! O.o

in the terms of service, it's implied that the profanity filter could be turned off entirely:

"You may not try to bypass any type of content filters on the site, such as our profanity filter. Moderate swearing is allowed as long as it is not directed at Staff or another player, is not in a pet name, account name, or thread title. If you do not wish to see swearing, then please use the profanity filter provided."

so that's probably on the long, long list of items that are being worked out.

@Dundee,

I think what he's asking for is not an option to turn the filter off, but for the admins to take a look at the filter and adjust it to be less sensitive so it doesn't incorrectly mark words for being "obscene." I can only assume this has to be possible somehow simply because it didn't block the word assume just then despite it having a "cuss word" within it. LOL

Actually, Mutie, that's one swear word that isn't blocked by the filter.

Aah that explains it then. XD I don't know why it doesn't block that yet it does block ******it, which isn't even a cuss word and offends far fewer people... lol

I worked once on a website about camellias for the local camellia club. There was a camellia named after a name that was at one time somewhat popular in the United States and still is elsewhere. The page that the name appeared on wouldn't work and so I contacted the people who ran the service, they made it work again, and then not too long after everything would start over again. It was really frustrating. I wonder how much more frustrating things are for people who actually have it as a name.

I've found it to be very difficult in just naming pets after things in nature. My Aurleon "Grasland Breeze" is a good example. All because 3 letters show up that make it a "banned" word.
Some games it gets so bad that a simple phrase like "sugar and spice", "Spice" is bleeped out because it's considered a bad word. I understand the need for the language filter but I would love it if the filter could be turned down a bit.

@Lunesca,

Adjusted the filter. Also I renamed your Aurleon (if you'd prefer the original, I can change it back).

In the future, just let us know of stuff like that. It's an easy fix.

Thanks Krinadon. Having the creators/admin actually this involved is very new to me. It's one of the very rare games that I'm even willing to post in the forums about anything (after much reading on other posts). Most games have nothing but bullies in the forums and the admins wait for the person to be reported x amount of times before doing something. I'm glad that you and Faiona are so involved in your creation. I'll probably be posting a few ideas for improvement later.

In that case, may I also mention that during the ice cream pet design contest I wasn't permitted to say anything about [P] rickly Pear Cactus, nor could I call one of the two pets I was designing for it [P] rickle Paw?

I was thinking I might actually make a take on the pair of pets someday.. but Nettle Paw didn't have nearly as nice a ring to it.. and I wouldn't want to risk making a pet named Prickly Paw, full of stars.
