1. You buy food for your pets either on their pages, or on your main stable page. It says it near the corner with other options. :3
2. First, you must check your inventory for the avatar items. You must then click 'use' and it'll go to your wardrobe, where you have to load pages until you find it under the appropriate slot in the items section.
