I was trying to catch a chocolate swirl slyvopora earlier today as I am a Tagged Pet collector and haven't caught one for myself yet. And my strong trap (purple) failed 3 times to catch a standard sylesti (blue). It was below about 40% hp in all 3 attempts.
Did I do something wrong? And do I need a trap that's the same colour as the sylesties name to be able to catch it (unless its a masterful trap)?

Nope. Catching rates are kind of random. And yes, you can't use a trap under the rarity if the Sylesti you want to capture.
Blue
Rare-Standard
Purple
Epic-Strong
Orange/Red:
Legendary/Mythical-Master
