There are a few different ways you can breed pets. To breed two pets you own, you'll want to go to the Breeding Grounds under the Explore tab. From there, it's pretty self-explanatory: pick the species of pet, then the two pets, and click the "breed" button. The "test breed" button will show you possible offspring results.

You can also breed a pet you own with a pet someone else owns, if they have it set up for breeding! On the other player's pet's profile page, click the "view prices" button and pick your pet you'd like to breed it with.

Also that Vene is set up for you now. (You have to "purchase" them for 1 gold, the minimal amount of gold you can sell a pet for)

If you have two pets you own you want to breed you can visit the breeding grounds, found under the Explore tab.

There are some conditions to being able to breed. Any of the following will exempt them from breeding:
1) Being an Adolescent/Hatchling/Eggling. Simply wait for them to mature to breed.
2) Having recently been bred. Females have a "breeding cool down" and they will take a few days to recover and be able to breed again, males don't have this cool down. Legendary species have a longer cool down.
3) Being infertile. Some players sell pets that have been made sterile, also some pets you can get as prizes may be sterile. This is irreversible and once done is permanent. Infertile pets will have an icon with a heart with a red circle cross on their profile.
4) They are in battle. You need to exit battle to breed a pet.
5) The two adults are related. Pets will refuse to breed with close family relations (father, mother, sister, brother, half siblings)
6) They are malnourished. Feed the pet for 100 gold on their profile or bulk buy feed in the stable tab.
7) They have fainted. They were badly injured in battle and you should give them a revival potion, or let them heal over night and try the next day.

You can also breed to pets you don't own. I suggest looking them up in the advanced search.
Go to the pets profile and click the breed button, you will be asked to select the mate from your stables. (Double check Name/ID number.) And pay the requested breeding fee. The egg will be transported to your hatchery.

You can hurry along egg and hatchling development by caring for them or asking others to care for them. (Either from the nurturing grounds or from the pets profile, you click their image and a pop up will appear asking you to comfort the baby. Successfully nurturing will progress their development and also reward you with either scales (can be used in the scale shop), seasonal currency, or trinkets. Incorrect nurturing will result in nothing and will not harm the baby. You can also simply ignore the baby and it will eventually hatch and grow up by its self.

Pets made via the generator (including starter pets) begin life at the start of adolescence, age-wise.
Pets age in Maturity Hours- maturity hours can be affected by nurturing (for eggling/hatchling) and magical pies (adolescent)
When a new egg is created via breeding or festival event it starts at 0/648 maturity hours
Without intervention:
Eggling stage lasts 72 hours (3 days)
Hatchling lasts 144 (6 days)
Adolescent lasts 432 (18 days)
pets reach adulthood at 648 hours (27 days old), and this is when they can start being used for breeding

You can see exact Maturity Hour counter on genetically tested and generated pets, untested pets will just show age category.
(on pet profile page; example, Walrus at time of me writing has "Maturity: Adolescent (253/648)". From this yopu can see he has 395 hours to adulthood (just over 16 days)
