Chapter One
Alethea
The Faelora shivered under the winter sun, and though it was a bright day, the winds were biting and relentless. She stayed close to her mother's side, not wanting to stray too far and end up lost. Sometimes, she heard stories. Of creatures that weren't kind and didn't try to be. Only a few weeks old, Alethea listened to the older females of her species, discovering bit by bit what was right and what was wrong.
Her mother was a kind figure. Wherever Alethea was, so was her mother, Adine. Adine was a pale blue, with deep royal blue eyes and a delicate face. She walked with caution in each step. Some may think that Adine was afraid, but Alethea knew better; her mother simply didn't want to hurt a tiny creature.
Alethea wanted to be like her mother. Adine was honest, caring and sought forgiveness in everyone. One day, Alethea would make someone happy. Someone would smile or laugh because of her.
On this particular day, it was the middle of winter and young Alethea and her herd were travelling away from home. She didn't quite know why, but Adine had told her it was because they needed food and shelter. Alethea was happy enough to jump in and out of snow drifts, even if she stumbled and slipped occasionally, just as long as she knew someone was near her.
After a while, she grew tired and slowed down. Adine glanced downwards as Alethea pressed herself to her mother's side. "Are you tired, darling?" Adine asked gently.
"I am." Alethea breathed quietly. "Can we stop somewhere and rest for a while?"
Adine looked ahead but shook her head. "I'm sorry, but we must keep moving. We won't make it in time if we rest now. Just walk slowly and stay close by."
"Are there bad creatures in the world?" Alethea asked curiously with wide eyes. "Will they try to stop us? Or hurt us?"
"Yes, there are bad creatures in the world." Adine spoke slowly. "But they're just misunderstood. Understand them, forgive them, treat them with kindness. I think they've just not seen the love they deserve."
Alethea smiled. She thought the idea of love was wonderful. A deep connection, something only you would know from experience. Not that she had experienced love yet. But she wanted to know what it was like to meet your true love, the one you'd know from first sight.
She wondered what her father was like. "Mother, how did you meet father?"
Adine was quiet for a moment. "It's a long and complicated story, darling."
"Was it love the first time you saw each other?" Alethea dreamed up a winding love story of heroism and true love, her eyes bright as she waited for her mother's reply.
"Not exactly." Adine finally said. "I'll tell you the story one day..."
