got our floorboards screaming, "he's not human!"

The roommate is observant. They have built a livelihood on watchfulness and meticulousness. They miss every single clue that their roommate is a fallen angel, and even their very inanimate flat is tired of it. The only person who isn't tired of it is their roommate, because he hasn't caught onto the intricacies of human life and thinks that, yes, he's doing quite well at staying hidden.

Azael, nope, that was his old name. Samael, who mostly goes by Sam, had picked up his new name simply by listening in on conversations and names that were mentioned. Little did he know, Samael wasn't as common of a name as he thought it was; he had missed the u memo and had replaced it with an a. Of course, it definitely didn't help that he had chosen the keep the first name he had heard.

Sam spent an incredible amount of time outside, being around people and learning their ways. So far, he'd found that they weren't as complex of creatures as had been said in heaven, so he wasn't too upset that he'd been banished. He had had his angel wings for a time, but they were gone now. How or why was a great question, and as of right now, he didn't have wings. Because heavenly creatures do not talk about the fallen, he didn't really know what his fate was.

But that was then, and this was now. Sam was currently being lazy, chilling on his bed, reading a book. One thing that made him stick out like a sore thumb, though, was that he didn't have a phone. He had seen one, as well as multiple other examples of human technology, and simply chose not to have one. Sam's ego had told him that he could definitely figure one out quickly if he had one, and whether that was true or not was yet to be seen.

In the adjacent room, Zhou Min stands with a kitchen glove pinned between her arm and the toaster she's cradling. A wooden chopstick has been inserted into the opening, where she jiggles it in an attempt to remove the bagel wedged inside the appliance.

With the graduate's efforts, a few tendrils of smoke and her breakfast comes popping free, a little scorched but otherwise intact.

The toaster is dropped onto the counter, and Zhou Min takes the time to smear a strawberry and cream cheese spread before biting in. One hand lands on the base of the plug, before she remembers her roommate and calls, "Samael, do you want me toast you a bagel?"

It's certainly louder than it has any right to be, but even a few days in to this arrangement, she can tell that he's an early riser. Guy's probably reading or something.

Sam can smell the burning before he sees it and before he hears her call out. When she did ask if he wanted a bagel, it took him a minute to stop reading in order to reply. He glances at the page number--because he absolutely refuses to dog-ear them--and closes it before getting up and stretching. At this point, he is making a conscious effort not to reply until he sees her face-to-face. He walks out into the other room and takes a good look at her own breakfast.

He shook his head, his curly hair practically bouncing. "I'm fine, thanks." No offense to Zhou Min, but the 'bagels' that he had seen that she hadn't made herself had never been...charred. Sam glanced at the wooden chopstick as well as the entire toaster she's got in her arms. He didn't know that the things that toasted were special enough to be held like a child should be.

"I'll leave it to you," Zhou Min says, upon Samael's arrival. He still has bedhead but everything else about his appearance put into place, so she decides that her assumption was correct.

The toaster is set back onto the table with all the gingerness of a mother sending their son off to daycare before Min bites into her bagel with a slight crunch. The chopstick ends up on their meal table, along with her plate, with the woman herself seated in one of the two chairs.

As she enjoys her breakfast, she finds herself watching her roommate decide what option he wants for breakfast. Their fridge is almost empty, so she offers, "I can pick up groceries this week, free of charge, if you'll get it the next?"

Because next week has her schedule crammed with overtime, and she's definitely not going to want to go shopping then. No, this is much better.

Sam wasn't really one to brush his hair, anyways. He'd run his fingers through it a couple of times before he headed out, but other than that and putting on some fresh clothes, he wasn't too worried about his appearance.

However, his new job required him to be in a suit, so he would have to go find one today. He wasn't exactly looking forward to it. Samael was not one who liked to shop. "Probably smart," he replied to her first response. While he didn't feel the need to cradle the toaster in order to get a good bagel. He opened the cupboards and scouted the fridge, but he wasn't too impressed with the options.

He decides to go without breakfast for the day. He was still getting used to the concept of hunger and the need for things to sustain himself in general. Sam nodded. "Okay, yeah. Sounds good. What're you planning on getting?" He asked.

Seems like Samael's going to be buying himself breakfast today, seeing how he's not getting anything out of the fridge. "The Starbucks on the corner is pretty fast, and it's as good as all the rest. Alternatively, McDonalds or Daylight Donuts are cheaper if you don't want a coffee," she suggests off-handedly, quickly finishing her own meal.

She moves to place her plate and utensils in the sink and grabs a sponge brush to rinse them with. A soft hum accompanies her movements as she cleans, thinking about what to buy.

It takes a few seconds before she answers, "Probably the iced bread loaves, mini croissants, and some muffins, breakfast wise. For the other two meals, I can pick up some chicken and ground pork meat-wise, and add in some potatoes and napa cabbage." She can make curry, dumplings, and meat buns with that.

As for some of the other meals, she asks, "Any other meats or vegetables you want? I'm frying them, so I can afford to be flexible."

After a quiet pause, she elaborates, "I don't usually find myself on cooking duty, but if you're busy with just moving and everything, I can make a little extra for you as well?"

Sam nodded slowly as though he was taking her words to heart. He wasn't, really, though. He wasn't going to eat breakfast, and that was that. "Okay," he replied, shutting the fridge. He was going to say that he would think about it, but there wasn't really a point in saying that, so he didn't.

He waits patiently for her response, leaning back against the counter. Sam listened quietly as she listed off the items that she was planning on getting. He was slightly surprised when she asked if there was anything he wanted or if he wanted her to make some for him, too.

After a moment of silence, he replied, "I think I do not need anything extra from the store, but I would appreciate it if you made some for me." Sam smiled a little. "I'll cover next week."

"That sounds great," she agrees, placing her plate and utensils onto a drying rack before drying off her hands. A glance at the oven tells her it's time to get ready for work, so Min brushes past her new roommate to search for her keys.

Before she leaves the kitchen though, she pauses in the doorway. "Good luck today," she calls, hovering a moment more before she slips away.

She's already dressed before breakfast, with a blouse and pants, but it's cold enough that she can get away jacket and she shrugs one on. Then she grabs her purse, checks for her phone, and slips out the door with her keys in hand.

"Yeah, good luck to you, too." He tried to respond before Zhou left. He returned to his room to prepare for the day.

~~~
After an incredibly long day, Sam arrived back at the apartment, opened the door, and stepped inside. He immediately kicked off his shoes, took off the jacket part of his suit, and sighed. "Ughhhh." Sam shut the door and leaned against it, scrubbing his face with his hand. His interview had gone great, and he would know if he had got the job for sure soon.
But not soon enough. He hated waiting on people here. If any of them knew...he would have everything he ever wanted without having to try. At least, that was what he decided to tell himself.
He shoved off the door, moving to scour the fridge for anything good. Sam was already picking up the habit of eating when bored.
