"Because if you weren't scared, you'd do it." She rolled her eyes too.

Taylor grinned, stepping over a log lying across their path. "Hey, I do have warmer clothes. They're just back at the campsite. I didn't think... that I'd get us lost."

"Not her specifically, but I'm supposed to be watching her. Apparently." Rylan paused for a second to observe their surroundings.

"If you weren't scared to climb a tree, you'd do it," he replied. "But of course you're never scared of anything, right? You're Miss Cheerleader who isn't scared of anything."

"Well...then how'd you manage to get us lost? Like...I know it's dark and everything, but still. Don't think I didn't hear you bragging about being a great tour guide."

"Oh. Okay, then." If he was supposed to be watching her and she wasn't here....welp, so much for that.

Izzy scoffed. "Fine, how about this? We both do the things we're 'not scared' to do. Deal?"

She sighed, eyes flitting up to the sky for a moment so she could observe their surroundings. It was getting darker. "I've been here before, but we must've strayed off trail at some point or I read the map wrong. But I'll help us find our way back. Promise."

"But it seems like we're the ones who are actually in trouble." Rylan sighed, finally slowing to a stop where there were less trees. "How about here?"

"...You do realize that I'm never going to be able to do the splits, right?" He asked, his eyebrows raised again

"Usually people don't promise things they aren't sure of. Actually, wait. Depends on the person, but that's not the point!"

"This'll do. And if it won't, then we'll just keep looking. Only one way to find out."

"It takes a couple of stretches a day. You'll learn." She obviously didn't think he would, but hopped off the seat and got out of the car. "Now, climbing the tree."

"You think I knew I was going to get lost?" Taylor rolled her eyes. "I don't wanna be stuck out here with bears and mountain lions either."

"Alright." Rylan walked to the center of the space. "We should probably clear out some of the stuff on the ground."

"Y'know...I'm not so sure I want to anymore. Especially if it means doing stretches. Because those are stupid," he said, staying right where he was.

Jack scoffed. "Please. Bears and mountain lions? Don't they usually sleep during the night? So you won't be stuck with them until morning."

Oliver nodded in agreement. "Anything alive won't burn easily, but they'll make a lot of smoke..."

"I knew it!" Izzy pointed an accusing finger from where she was standing near the tree. "You're scared."

"Actually," she corrected, remembering something her father had told her. "In lots of areas, mountain lions hunt at night after hiding during the day. Especially around dusk. You know, like right now."

"Smoke could tell someone where we are...," Rylan mused.

He raised his broken eyebrow. "I'm not scared, I'm just refusing to do something I don't want to. There's a huge difference."

"Oooh. Yeah, see I wouldn't know that. So basically we're screwed. Welp, might as well just sit here and wait for our inevitable death."

"Exactly. And the smoke will most definitely be warmer than the surrounding air, and so the smoke will rise and people will be able to find us, hopefully."
