I glance down. I'd ended up grabbing one of the ladder rungs near the end, but I wasn't done free falling. "Ack, no!" I yelled back up, but I wondered if she'd already let go during my hesitation. I wouldn't put it past her. At least, not yet.

Quieting down, I let the tips of my tennis shoes pillow up clouds of dirt until I had a good grip on the ground. I gave the rope two sharp tugs before sprinting away, hoping the girl understood.

You hear a quite thump, followed by a slightly louder one, presumeably the ladder and the girl. "This way," A voice hisses, coming from your right.
