Vex was very careful when he got out, keeping close to the car and legs bent to stay low. He did pretty good at it actually, as if he'd had to watch his own safety like that.

While he was out, she brushed at her face with the flat of her hand, glancing down at the blood, and swiped at her cheek with a paper napkin

He quickly got his contacts and pill containers out from his bag, closed the trunk quietly, and then came back.

"Come on," she said. "Let's get the heck outta here before they come back."

He nodded, closing the door as he pulled his legs in.

She started the car again with a lurch. Rumbling over the dirt road, they came to a paved T junction. Electa turned right, and the Mustang gained speed. She pushed a hand through her hair and shook the glass out. Or tried to, anyway. She lifted her voice over the wind. "Okay, we've got to ditch this car and find another one, like now, before they find us and try again."

He nodded, reaching over and gently starting to remove the glass best he could. He'd put his contacts in carefully already, so the only thing in his way of his sight was his hair a bit.

She pretended not to notice, but it was pretty hard not to. She shifted gears and asked Vexin if he knew how to hotwire a car

Still tenderly coming through her hair for glass, he nodded. "Yes."
