Sylestia has one of the best communities I have ever seen in a virtual pet game. The players are kind, accepting and ridiculously generous.

Seriously I owe a freaking life debt to a user named Vuplie for giving me over 2 mil worth of avi items. I could NEVER repay her and yet she did it anyway.

Seriously if you need or want something, all you need to do is ask and someone will probably give it to you. (If they don't want it themselves, or for someone else, blar blar blar.) My point is that the user base is wonderful here. I would play even if the pets weren't as magnificent as they are.

Is there any other way to get diamonds other than buying them with money?

yea, but it's usualy from event and in realy smal amount ( by exemple i already got 1 from the sea creature hunting in summer), some user may actualy do a contest with some diamon, for a good designe idea or somthing like that or there is some people who sale stat projects / art and ask some diamond. You can get some by currencie exchange too but it's realy expencive most of the time.
