The seaman just nodded and tossed him a small apple. I was saying nothing young one.

As I was saying once Waverider is out of hearing range Why do you think he pushes himself so hard? Skipper asked. Once you can answer that question I will let him rest.

"From what I heard from him, he's determined to rescue his crew. Though that's honorable, I doubt he's in a good enough shape to do that..." Kaladin replied. "...especially if he can hardly work without flinching or crying out,"

The theory is half right the other part is stubborn pride. Waveriders are known for it never asking of others what they werent willing to dothemselves. Skipper spoke from what sounded like experience.
