He can't, he would probably become exhausted and not be able to move and then ... die pitifully. He couldn't try anything. And Saph will only stop her morning tears if he is still there, she would never stop crying if they said he would never come back.

Kate had really hated the night shift tonight. It had been worse than usual

A lot worse, D seemed to still be very bothered by it. She was a bit pale and was staring down, her tail and wings where slumped and it looked like she had to pay a lot of mind to make sure she didn't drop Sapphire.

Kate pulled D into a hug

She shuddered once before hugging back with one arm, the other cradling Sapphire as she twisted and whimpered softly. D sniffled a little, trying not to cry.

"It's over," Kate said softly. "We'll get through this together. Luke isn't going to hurt you anymore, I swear to you."

She started mumbling words quickly, none understandable because they came faster than a bullet from a gun. Every word seemed to bring her closer to tears, so she must be speaking of Luke.
