Would pixel art be okay for the drawing portion? I've been working with sprites lately and it seems like it would be fun to do~

Okay, so the wardrobe finally worked for me and I got to create my avatar and sylesti :D
So, what I decided to do was embody the essence of my faveorite author of all time- J.R.R. Tolkien. However instead of creating a warrior or a specific character, I wanted to do something that would embody the spirit of Middle-Earth, the land of The Silmarillion, the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. Now Tolkien had a love of nature as were some of the underlying themes of his works (The orcs represented industry and pollution, the elves represented nature at its beauty, and the free people such as men and hobbits represented us and our decision to make a change) so I used mostly a nature theme- mutual browns and greens and a very loose fitting outfit instead of armor. The dragon and elven staff are the mystical portions of the world he creates. After all, Smaug the dragon was the first ever dragon character I read as a child. The pointed ears represent elves and even hobbits (hard to tell sometimes under their curly hair but hobbits have pointy ears) and I tried to represent all manner of races here but I couldn't really do anything for dwarves without making the avatar look too mish-matched. All the same points go to the Sylesti, again very nature and elven themed.
