Just to be convincing, Jack turned to Ray and used his sword as if to press it to their throat. But his eyes held no harmful intent and the blade just barely didn't touch their skin.

Ray hums in despair, shuddering slightly when Jack turned and pulled his sword on them. He understood why Jack did it, but it still made Ray sad.
The guard nods to herself, satisfied, and returns her focus to her shift.

Jack waits until she's gone, then takes his sword away. But his hand had trembled as if ... he'd wanted to make pain for Ray. But he'd given them mercy.

Ray quietly thanks Jack, lowering his gaze. He pushed off the tree so he was standing completely on his two legs again. "So where do we head? I have something of a reputation in several areas, and not for the best reasons..."

jack put his sword away. "Go far away from here, anywere you can that will be safe. I'm of no use to you and I can't provide anything." He closed his eyes, then opened them with a sad sigh. "All I can do is wish you the best of luck in another land."

"I said we..." Ray mumbles to themself, hugging themself. "We can figure this out together." They sigh as well and turn their hug to Jack, hugging him tightly. "I don't want to leave you." They say, voice catching slightly. They didn't want to be alone.

He hugged them back. "And I don't want you to leave me, I have no one else now. But..." he shut his eyes tightly. "You are not safe here and I cannot provide you safety. Even if I had kept my job."

"You shouldn't have to provide everything. We can figure this out together. If I made you leave your job I'm sorry..." Ray pauses and worries that if they stayed with Jack, they'd make life worse for them. It was like they were a bad luck charm. Bad things happened to Errapel when Ray met him, things that wouldn't have happened if they hadn't met him. Bad things already had happened to Jack because Ray had entered into his life, and it was just going to continue if they stayed with him.

"It's fine, it's not your fault. It's mine. My judgement was flawed and it costed lives, it is my fault. ... but ..." He gently took one of Rays hands into his own. "I'd like it if we did figure it out ... together."

Ray wanted to argue and point out that it wasn't Jack's fault if it was on the topic if lost lives, Ray had been the one to take them, but they decided to drop it because they didn't want to argue. Ray takes Jack's other hand and nods. "Together." They echo. Then they note, "We should probably get away from here before something else happens..." They take one hand back and applies pressure to where he had been stabbed with the sword a few minutes earlier, the absence of the numbing ability of adrenaline leaving them in pain. They lead Jack to their hide out, a slightly less chaotic place now that they had cleaned up some.
