Hi Riokki I saw you mention you were going into the 11th grade and starting your A levels soon. You're actually going into Year 11 in British school right? That's the equivalent of going into 10th grade, we're a year "ahead" numerically, thought you might be interested to know :)

LostCry - the UK doesn't use grades :) I imagine a lot of other places don't but I figured I'd respond as I thought maybe you were curious. We do years 1 through 12 with 12 being the year you sit your final pre-university exams. But you're right, whoever said that 13 is 6th grade was wrong, it would indeed be 7th grade or year 8.

I'm from England where we have years.

2-5yrs nursery

4-5yrs reception (not always used)
5-6yrs year 1
6-7yrs year 2 ~first SATs
7-8yrs year 3
8-9yrs year 4
9-10yrs year 5
10-11yrs year 6 ~second and main SATs (although the goverment is messing the first up...)
11-12yrs year 7
12-13yrs year 8 (me)
13-14yrs year 9
14-15yrs year 10
15-16yrs year 11 ~GECEs (not sure if the s is big or little :P)

then there is sixth form which i think goes to year 14 although I'm not sure... Its where you do A-levels -or you could go to collage i beleive

The schools used to run with the three-teir system
First: (possible reception) usualy starts at y1 and finishs at y4
Middle: y5 - y8
High: y9 - sixth form

but the goverment changed it to two-teir
Primary: (pos. reception) y1 -y6
Secondary: y7 -sixthform

The goverment is messing up the real bad schools right now so yeah.

I had it pretty bad, went through the three-teir until the end of y5 when they closed my middle school, then went to a primary -which was my old first school. Then i went to a seconary school which still was called a high school, but it was terrible so i left in Nov. of last year and became home-ed but will return to a high school in y9.

Our school years start in September after a six-week hoilday. When do yours start?

We still aren't out yet, but it will start in fall.

We get all of summer and the rest of our breaks are sprinkled here and there, if that's what you are asking. Just woke up and my mind is still groggy xD

Hi Moggaz a few things were actually wrong with your post -

GCSEs happen at the end of year 11, not GECEs.
Sixth form goes to year 13, as does college, where the options are A-Levels among other things such as BTECs. Two year courses.

Traditionally we have not had a three tier system, we have primary and secondary school. Middle and High Schools are not an all-encompassing term in England as middle schools are rather unusual due to key stages and High school for the most part is an americanised term for secondary school. I did, however, go to a High school, but it followed normal secondary pattern of 11-18 and was called a high school in name. I still had to apply to it through the secondary school application pricess.

Middle and Junior schools, alongside High schools, do exist. But they certainly haven't been the "norm" in our lifetimes, not since education acts in the 40s and 60s, so I'm not sure telling the Americans that is helpful haha :P

You have to remember that schooling in the UK is a little more complicated than the way things are set out overseas in America because we have various areas (Scotland, Wales, etc) and various very old education laws. The absolute standard for the UK however is primary and secondary. It sounds like your experience included middle/junior schools and that does happen in some education authority areas but the vast majority of people will not experience this, so, stating it's the average path or has been anytime recently will likely just lead to confusion.

Hope that clears things up a bit for you :)
