They are found in folktales and mythology originating from the Northern Isles of Scotland.

The folk-tales frequently revolve around female selkies being coerced into relationships with humans by someone stealing and hiding their sealskin, thus exhibiting the tale motif of the swan maiden type.

There are counterparts in Faroese and Icelandic folklore that speak of seal-women and seal-skin.

Personality-
Grant is an outgoing and adventurous fellow, his curiosity always getting the best of him. Grant might be naive but he can't help to be inquisitive. He is quite intelligent for an airhead, however; he's just better with retaining interesting subjects than social awareness. Grant can also be a blabbermouth, whenever he finds anyone interested in him, he can talk with them for hours without realizing it.

He's incredibly patient with others, never snapping. It seems that Grant doesn't even have an angry bone in his body, he's just gentle like that. On the other hand, he can get a bit touchy about his skin. Every Selkie gets touchy about their skin, especially their women; but now that the belief in them has faltered significantly, they worry less and just make sure no one sees their seal skin.

Appearance-
Grant stands at the average height of 5'8, he has a build with a small amount of fat and an average amount of muscle. He is often seen wearing turtle necks and khakis, he has thin brimmed square glasses, and his skin is worn in the fashion of a fashionable jacket. This of course can be mistaken for any old leather because the fur is on the inside when being worn in public. His seal form is that of a Gray Seal, a large one at that. It's well known around the northern coasts and is lovingly nicknamed "Big Bill" by the locals.

Backstory-
Grant was born in northern Scottland, raised like most other Selkies are, in the waters until they're old enough to master changing skins. After that, his mother was sure to keep him close at all times, knowing what an airhead he was.
Now that he's an adult, he took this new freedom to explore the world and get a feel for it. But he knows, he'll end up back home to

Personality- Nethimir is self-centered and rude to other people, and stays away from most others.
Appearance-

Backstory- Not much is known other than most of her friends/family were killed by a beast that roams the seas, which is why she stays away from others, she doesn't want what happened before to happen again.
Powers/abilities- Nethimir can use sign language/her voice to make a dark magic to do things like hunting and to 'summon' another arm.
Other- Nethimir calls herself a 'evil witch' to scare others off.

She doesn't usually go on land, so lets say she stays the same as she is already on land

In that case it may be a good idea for her to use either a wheelchair or very long clothing to hide her fishiness. Because generally humans are not fish creatures who are known for drowning people
