She gingerly stroked his cheek. "But effort can be made." She said softly, then went in.

Ray takes a deep breath before entering the house after her, nervously tugging on the cuffs of their sleeves.

(*Believes is very smart.*)

Jack wasn't there any more, he had gone to what had been his old room when he'd been younger.

Bethany closed the door behind Ray, telling them that their food and milk was waiting on the table for them.

(*pretends not to be hopping around the house reciting the lines that I remember that aren't my own while everyone else is staring at me like I've grown a third eye or something*)

Ray feels less nervous but more guilty when she realizes Jack isn't where she'd left him. "Thank you." Ray says to Bethany and heads to the table.

"Of course." She said, leaving and getting something. She came back a minute later with a bowl with some batter she was stirring. "You wouldn't know, but Jackson is sensitive despite what he shows."

Ray quietly eats the food in front of them, listening to Bethany. "Yeah... Would you know what I could do or say to cheer Jack up right now?"

Lol.)

"Well..." She came and sat besides them. "I only remember him crying once before, when he was eight and had lost his father. All he needs is someone to take a long time just to hold him."

Ray nods and moves the food around on their plate some. They sigh again, "I don't think Jack wants to see me right now. Or ever again."

"Oh, don't say that." Bethany said, gingerly stroking Rays cheek as if they were her own child. "He needs a friend right now, and I do believe your his only one close by."

Ray pulls away from her touch, shaking their head and feeling extremely guilty, "No, I'm not his friend. I killed his friend. I'm a terrible person." They flinch when they say that, realizing they had spoken before they had thought it through again.
