The scientist produced a syringe with a small needle, and said, "Hold still. This is really going to hurt."
(It won't she's using the technique that if the patient thinks it will really hurt, it won't actually hurt that bad.)

The scientist gently and skillfully inserts the needle, depresses the plunger, and withdraws the needle, not causing more than a slight pinch at the beginning.
