Sorry, it seems that I missed your ping.

I think I have to disagree with you. Mythology, in my opinion, stems mostly from psychological roots with inspiration from common animals. There are a few creatures which bear resemblance to reports of cryptids, and it is entirely possible that those few were based off of actual sightings, but I would surmise that the majority of them do not actually conform to realistic principles.

and @Goldennautilusdreams

There does appear to be much similarity between modern-day sea or lake creatures and prehistoric plesiosaurs, but why is that particular creature the only one that you believe exists?

Well yes, The Loch Ness Monster is one of the more believable cryptids. But, really? You don't believe in any of the others? Why?

Sorry, no, I did not ping you. I meant no offense. I guess I just thought it was a conversation between Jade07 and I (wow, you're right, that does sound pretty harsh! I will not make this mistake in the future! :))

Anyways.

The thing is, what I mean is that, a lot of cryptids are so similar to some mythical creatures that I, both a mythology and cryptozoology lover, can't help but suspect! I'm not saying that ALL mythology is true, or even that a LOT of it is true, I just mean that a good deal COULD have been inspired by the appearance of certain cryptids (and, of course, regular or deformed animals, on those typical dark, cloudy nights from a distance)

There are some mythical creatures that are perfectly sensible in their having been "seen"(in my own opinion), such as dragons, freybugs, enfields, owlursus, manticore, naga, amphiptere, wyvern, amphisbaena, lindwurm, pegasus, unicorns, hippogriffs, hippocampus, gryphons, sea-serpents, etcetera.

I used to *shrugs*

But, I also used to do a /lot/ of research on events, and watched the show "Mystery Hunters". (I was also really into extinct animals) But after a lot of looking into things, most have plausible explanations for example:
El Chupacabra - Coyote with mange sickness
Jackelope - Shope papilloma virus, which is basically horn like tumors
Hodag - Hoax

^Much more than that too. Some creatures I still think could exist, but a lot of explanations for themselves.

i beleve that most mytholegy is true i have no reson not to beleve in most and i have herd of crytedids being spotted i even felt like i was being watched once when i was in the woods i believe it was some sort of unicorn or even more losly a clocking cryptid or a taily as i am now calling them i never herd anything about a cyrtptid or anything like that being spotted in our area and what do you mean by "seen" if you meen that you beleve i do to even tho i never herd of a freybug or enfield hippogriffs are new to me too i always wished i could own a crytid or even see one even tho i never saw one i believe in them we have explored more of outer space then we have our own ocean who's to say that can't go for land too ho and here are some steps for avoiding the more dangrus crydids
tailypo
1 if it looks like it was hit by a car it might be a tailypo
2 if it talks or even sounds like its saying who has my tailypo run they have been known to attack in stories they attacked a mans three dogs in one story
3 realy big claws taily-run time
4 bigger then a cat run
if i think i know what a naga is i know how to avoid it
1 don't go near a old river at night or even in the day if one has been spotted

@Magyak101

Oh, I didn't mean your and Jade07's conversation. I wouldn't have pinged me, either. I meant the first post on page three, which was absolutely my fault for not seeing.

Well, alright, I'll mostly agree with you in those cases. While it is possible that they were mimicked from real creatures, I'm still not gonna exclude the possibility that they came from different sources.

Also, I can't help but make the joke: I don't understand how native people could have possibly seen a hippocampus! They weren't advanced enough to perform autopsies and identify the portion of the brain responsible for memory and emotion! [insert cricket chirps] I usually just call it the hippocamp to avoid confusion. Anyway, it seems to be the inspiration for our Kelparies.

@Carrotbae

I don't deny the presence of hoaxes, and I pretty much just say that jackalopes are a lot of hooey anyhow, but I must argue with your statement on el Chupacabra. Of the sightings of the creature, many of those recounting them are quite familiar with the appearance of mangy coyotes, and all dismissed that possibility. In addition, there are two different descriptions being handed around for the appearance of the chupacabra. One is that hairless dog-like variety, but others say that they are humanoid with large red eyes and frills. While those are much less common, they could also be attributed to the phenomenon of these livestock deaths. If there is no chupacabra, then what is draining animals of their blood?

@Jade07

The feeling of being watched is a common illusion initiated by heightened sense of danger or paranoia. What makes you think that a creature such as the ones you listed was actually in the woods that day?

I am so glad to hear your opinion, I can not even say!

I have had some...supposed...experiences with creatures. The Mutated Alien Big Cats, or possibly Shadow Cats, for example.
I have suspicions about specters, maybe shadow-people.

Yes, I believe in most mythology. Not so much the gods/goddesses, or other supreme beings, but I do believe in some of the spirit creatures. And I see no reason NOT to believe in mythical animals. For me, unless there is solid proof against a creature, it deserves my support.

Because who knows what's trying to throw you of its trail?

The tailypo, as you show a distinct amount of interest for, seems to remind me (in description) of a large weasel. And, according to mythology, a weasel is the only creature that can kill a basilisk. Could, by weasel, tailypo have been meant? I have no proof or reason to believe this. But I have not proof not to believe it.

Jade07, why don't we move this discussion to my Welcome All Mythology Lovers! thread, since it technically falls under the subject of Mythology? Here is a link, if you are interested: https://www.sylestia.com/forums/?thread=42167
