The puppy looked back once before eating. Once it was done Adam put it up, getting ready for nightfall.

Crystal lit a small scrap of her old clothing of fire, and laid on it. This was the only way to keep warm for her. She curled up on the embers, and shivered.

Adam shut the door, falling asleep next to the dog. That night he had nightmares about losing Crystal, of her dying.

A wisp of smoke, floated on a gust of wind. It lead straight to where Crystal was sleeping. A bit slipped under the door of the container.

When he smelt the smoke he panicked. No! No! He threw the coveres over his head and tried to hide from the smoke.

Crystal stirred slightly in her sleep, warmed only slightly by the hot embers.

The flashbacks hit him. The fire...him running, the gas can that he had picked up when he had set the car on fire...the screams...the pain. He cried out, scaring the puppy who started barking.

One of Crystals scaly ears flicked up, but she did nothing else

He shuttered for a moment, eyes wide in fear. No pain came to him, just the smell of smoke. Adam curled up further, trembling as tears rolled down his face. "I'm sorry! I didn't know! How could I have known? They were all sleeping! I didn't know there was anyone in that car, that the gas can had leaked...."

The wisp of smoke slowly dissapeared, but left a clear trail. Crystal shifted slightly, to get the maximum warmth.
