I go out and search each statue to see if the key is hidden anywhere or if there is any clue as to where the key might be.

you will never find it (you have a dagger, you can use it asa lockpickor use one in the chest room

"Oh I am such an idiot!" I slap my hand against my face. I rush back up to the dragons, open my lock pick set and pick the locks.
(I had completely forgotten about the lock pick set! That was my pick from the items at the start of the game!)
