Near the feline in an attempt not to spook it

The cat sees you and backs away, running into a pile of leaves and slipping on them. It fell on its side and looked at you with wide scared eyes. You can tell its a boy by looking at its nose.

I stop and sit down, waiting for the male cat to approach

The cat looks at you, standing up as it shot you scared glances, then seeming to realize you are not a threat slowly approached you, holding it's stumpy tail in the air as it approached.
