Quin | Daelynn
"Blue sails, remember?" Mariona asked. Quin smiled and ruffled his little sister's hair.
"Blue sails. I promise," he replied. In their clan, all the 16-year-olds were brought to the mainland, and the Caldera, by a small ship for each of them. When they returned, they flew the flag with their family's crest from the mast so the Daelynn could tell who was who. If they survived, they rigged up sails in the blue of their clan. If they died during the Trial, the sails were black.
Mariona's eyes were the same bright turquoise as the waters surrounding the Daelynn's islands, and now, they shone with tears.
Quin knelt down in front of her and put his broad, calloused hands on her shoulders. "Don't cry, Mari. I'll come back, you'll see."
She sniffed. "But what if you don't? And imma miss you while you're gone anyway."
Quin gave her a lopsided grin in an attempt to cheer her up. "I'm only gone for two weeks. A week of the Trial, plus the feast for the survivors and the days of travel."
Mariona's eyes flicked up from where she had been studying the ground. "You didn't tell me there was a feast."
"Yep. At the end, there's a massive feast with partying and laughter. I hear the Ksaraji are even putting on a fire show this year."
"I wanna go!"
Quin laughed. "I might just be able to arrange it, Mari."
She hopped up and down. "Ooh, I can't wait!"
He smiled. At least she wasn't sad anymore. There was a feast, true, but he wasn't sure if she would be able to come.
"I'll see you in two weeks," Quin said, scooping her up in his arms. Mariana giggled.
Ill miss you, Quin, she murmured.
Quin didnt say anything, only giving his seven-year-old sister a quick squeeze before putting her down. He didnt believe in saying goodbyes, only see-you-laters.
He headed over to where his ship was docked - a small silverwood sailboat with a covered area belowsdecks and two masts with white sails. A flag with his house crest - a gold-and-orange setting sun over an ocean of turquoise, silver, and blue, with black crossed tridents in the sun - flew from the top of the mainmast.
You ready, Aquila? he called to his twin sister, who stood on the deck of her own boat next to him, though it bore the same flag.

Aquila| Daelynn
Aquila grinned toward her twin. She was already facing the horizon on her own small lean ship of pale striped birch.
Her boat was ready and just needed to be untied to sail down the river to the Caldera. Her heart lept in fear and exitement at the thought. She had already said her goodbyes to Mari and their father, who had seen them off.
*Are you?!* she cried over the salty sea wind still whipping her shortly cut ashy blonde hair.
She leaned down along with everyone else and untied her boat, and it drifted with the river stream.
She waved towards those ashore or in the larger ships out farther in the sea.
It only then hit her she was leaving the sea, and there was a chance of never seeming again. So she waved to her clan, and waved to the sea.
*Come on!* she called as her boat drifted by Quinns, she knew he didnt like goodbyes.
*Waving can be a saying goodbye and hello! So say say both to the sea and then the Caldera!*
She made sure to still mind her boat though. Keeping the ropes tied right and the sail pointed with the wind, though the river also carried them along.
Her stormy grey eyes pinned Quinns own, her face serious for once.
*Well be back. Well see father and Mari again, I promise.*
(Susies wondering what happened to the frosting thingy she was gonna borrow or something?)

Quin gave a several long pulls on a rough rope, hoisting the mainsail, then tying the line off. His ship shot forward. The elegant, pointed prow split the water, sending up sprays of salt.
The Daelynn lived on islands off the mainland coast, and they had a good distance to go before they would be met by the Taurin a short ways up the river. From there they would get horses and ride the remaining miles to the Caldera.
The wind ruffled his dark hair and water misted his face. He took the line attached to the end of the boom and looped it around an tie-off spike on the rail, then pulled it tight. The wind here was fairly constant, so he wouldn't have to be constantly adjusting it, and with the wind coming directly from behind as it often did, scouring the mainland cliffs, he wouldn't have to tack.
Quin brought his boat, which was about twenty feet long, aside Aquila's. "It really never gets old, aaynta?"
He'd quite literally been born on a ship, he and Aquila both, and they had spent as much time on them and in the water as they did on land.
"I'll race you to the mouth of the river, tesca!" he shouted, taking control of his sail and trimming it so he shot ahead of Aquila.
((Each tribe has there own language, we can use occasional phrases from each one, I'll put the basics on the first post. There's the common tongue as well, which for the sake of simplicity will be English.))
((Aaynta is the Daelynn equivalent of the French n'est-ce pas, with is a term that kinda means 'does it?' or 'doesn't it' or 'am I right?'. So Quin basically said "It never gets old, does it?" Make sense? It's pronounced A-en-tah, with the A making it's name sound. Tesca means Sister in the literal sense, and it's pronounced TES-kah.))

Aquilla| Daelynn
*Wheres the fun in it all being the same?!*
Aquilla leapt to her ropes, leaning back on them far enough to also reach her rutted at the end of her boat. With one hand still holding the rope to reach to her rutter, maneuvering with it around her brothers boat, squeezing between his slim one and another wider, and so slower, one with Cadell aboard.
She snorted as she glanced to see his large shoulders stiffen as she passed. But Quinn was still just ahead.
She tied her rope to the rutter, keeping the rope taught and the rutter forward. She then raced towards the mast, reaching up and yanking on the sail on the mast. Angling it more to the wind and pulling the touch patched grey and white fabric with fresh pain taught.
She smirked at she caught up to Quinns boat, nearly ramming into Meeras as well, and then pulling forward.
*Kyratiicse!* She laughed brightly as she waved to her twin, her grey eyes as wild as the sea in a storm.
She was ready for this. For an adventure.

((Quin has only one 'n' in it, it's not Quinn.))
Quin yanked on the rudder, tacking hard. The smooth wooden boom came so close to his head as it swung over he felt it brush his hair.
He had moved right into Aquilla's path, causing his sister to have to either pull away and loose her lead or crashing her boat into Quin's.
Quin looked behind himself to check on Aquilla, and realized they had left almost everyone else behind. The only one keeping up was Quin's betrothed, the daughter of the Natia, Kaenna.
He flashed several rapid hand signals to Kaenna. The beautiful girl nodded. She reached up with one hand and pulled her long, coppery hair loose. It blew out behind her like the pennant on her mast with the seven-pointed star with a wave-and-rose design in the center.
Quin and Kaenna angled their ships together, pinning Aquilla's boat in between the two. There was a crunching as one of the railings on Quin's sister's boat splintered.
Kaenna drew a small dagger set with a clear aquamarine gem, the same color as her eyes.
"Hand over all your valuables or prepare to be boarded!" she called, her voice filled with laughter.
While Aquilla was distracted, she waved at Quin in a shooing motion. He pulled away, arrowing through the water and gliding into the mouth of the river and up the calm inland waters.
