Lyra shifted to her human form, a thirty-five year old version of Luca, her hair a much darker color.

We, the Kosha'chi, as were came to be known, have had our genes designed by rogue scientists trying to create the perfect weapon. We turned out to be too expensive, and were shut down. The government of the Soviet Union sent death squads to dispose of the failed test subjects. I still remember the terror when the shooting started. I had a friend, a Sobachnik, who was shot. When the terror subsided, I found his body, mangled almost beyond recognition from machine gun fire. My brother was the only one left. I'd been artificially inseminated and had a litter, and they were going to do it again soon when this happened. Only one body-a child's-was unaccounted for. That child was Thomas."

"Well, that sounds delightful," Ethan said sarcastically.

" I had to eat a bunch of it during training. It was awful when the pain kicked in."

"Training for what?"

" becoming a tamer."

"So, why did you eat it? It sounds like torture."

" so I could withstand torture. And yes it was."

"oh," she looked shocked. thinking back to her fight in the last lab she had been in. it was a close cut but her and those boys had made it out alive. she remember then yelling at them and one of the oldest telling her to ignore them that they were just empty promises
