While I am not against this totally, I am not really sure it is feasible for a site like Sylestia.

IE, a site with a small staff.

When having several languages available through the site itself, I feel that someone on the staff *should* know that language, so they can know whether or not something can be translated to something rude/insulting/disgusting.

If you look up 'Brand Blunders' on wikipedia there are several instances of seemingly 'harmless' words meaning something completely different in a different language.

While allowing people who have knowledge of the language to 'contribute' to the translation, it still would require someone on staff who knows the language to approve those changes.

For one, just because someone uses the language every day doesn't mean they know every nuance of it. For another, if it is allowed for anyone to make changes, it doesn't mean they are a native user of that language. Look at wikipedia for example. While there are supposed to be sources for it, it doesn't necessarily mean that those sources are credible, and so it falls to someone to moderate the changes that are asked to be made.

I don't think that anyone on sylestia would deliberately try to 'sneak in' crude or things like that into the translation, but I could see it being a possibility, especially if it were a lesser used language on Sylestia, and there is always the potential of a non-native speaker using the wrong words etc..

The reason why I feel that the site staff has to know the language is because the translations are going to be on their server and linked to their site, and they could be held responsible for anything that is there. (not so much legally, but it could look very bad on the site itself, if it became known as having a 'translation' that isn't actually a translation but basically a couple of people having fun 'sneaking' disallowed content in)

I support this completely. I do believe, however, that this could take a while to instate and perfect since the mods/admins would obviously have to know the varying languages themselves and/or hire someone who does to prevent inappropriate content popping up anywhere on threads in separate languages. Aside from that, I see no real problems preventing this from becoming a Sylestia feature in the future.

I support this, but I think it's better not to push this. Sylestia still only has a relatively small crew working behind it, and this would take a long time to integrate. However, it would be incredibly useful. When people tell me that Google Translate can translate things okay, I generally expect them to be liars, since I cannot understand anything that Google Translate says, even if it's between two fairly common languages.
There are also a few specialized language translatorss out there (e.g. English to spanish, or french to german), and those are generally extremely accurate, and could be used fairly large-scale to translate the site. However, there are also a couple of caveats to doing this, like how you'd need someone (who is preferably native to that language) to run through everything and check it. Even so, having a computer do most of the work with one person to proofread, would be far preferable to having 50-some people (who may or may not be native speakers, or even know the language at all- they could just be using google translate) run through and translate everything, which could easily lose all corrdination- I think you get the point. This is a good idea, but not one I'm expecting soon.
