Mao paused as he heard a faint squeak. Swiveling his head he caught a glance of a feathered form. Some bird of prey hunting he surmised. He spotted what he was after further down the road. Car number 47. Brutus's usual ride. He quickly trotted off down the sidewalk towards the vehicle.

Mao put his paws up on the door when a long nose poked from the window. A gruff voice rang out, "Thought I smelled a furball. What's up Black?"

"Not much" the feline sleuth replied. "Just out making the rounds and thought I'd see what the word on the street is."

The big German Shepard snorted, "Not alot. All I got is a rumor about Big Joe eating his kids homework. You know what his kids like. I'd say the kids too lazy to do his homework".

The black cat smirked, "Because we both know Big Joe is too lazy to eat it." Both pets chuckled at the thought.

Brutus yawned, "If your bored you might do me a favor and check out 37th street. A pup got out of the fence there last week. They got the fence fixed, but I still check the neighborhood to make sure it stays that way. I was going to check today, but we got a school presentation."

Mao kicked a paw thoughtfully, "Hmmm not my usual thing, but a stretch of the paws would do me good. Might patrol by the harbor just to check out any incoming arrivals. Make sure we dont get any of the flea ridden ones spreading stuff around."

Mao trotted down the alley nudging the fence posts as he went. So far they were all solid. He paid little attention to the few barking dogs. His skills were usually enough to keep him safe. Also most pets knew his reputation and left him well enough alone. When he had first started out his sleuthing career he had been chased quite frequently. As his list of solved cases grew that occurence grew less. Also helped that he was on friendly terms with Brutus.

(Sorry it took so long. We had to take my step brother to the city for emergency dental surgery. He had an abscess the size of a golf ball).

Mao swiveled his ears detecting a slight sound. Sliding into the shadows, his dark fur made him nearly invisible. He waited to see what was making the sounds he heard.

Mao silently sighed in relief. It was just a little pup. Hopefully it didnt come through a damaged fence. Deciding to find out he stalked out behind the pup. He cleared his throat, "You lost little pup?"
