Alright, here are a few personal favorites in no particular order...
Sonic 3 & Knuckles:
No surprise to anybody who knows me. Out of all the platformers I've played it's probably my favorite. I'm a sucker for the 16-bit graphics, and I like how it attempts to tell a bit of a story in between levels, which is kinda nice considering how old the game is.
The Sonic series as a whole gets a bad rap, but it's not bad at all as long as you avoid the weird, toxic parts of the fandom...
Okay, and Sonic 06 and the Boom games. Avoid those too.
Mario Odessey:
My introduction to Mario was pretty rocky, my first game being New Super Mario Bros for the DS (Would not reccomend. It's not awful, I just wasn't crazy about it). But Odessey put such a fun and clever spin on the traditional Mario game that I keep finding myself coming back to it reguardless.
Sonic Mania:
Again, it's a solid platformer. The stages are engaging and wild, the boss fights are creative, and the soundtrack has a few decent bops. Not much to say about it other than it's fun.
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
I have spent so many hours on this game, and boy, were those hours worth it! It boasts a beautiful and enormous open world for you to navigate, the enemies are fun to take down, puzzles can be beaten in several different ways, the story is engaging and might make you cry, and best of all, you can play the game entirely at your own pace. Definately pick this up if you haven't played it already!
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky:
Now, there's no Pokemon game I've played that I didn't like, but this game is so underrated, and it's one of my all-time favorites. It was the first video game to really startle me as well as bring me to tears. This dungeon-crawler really deviates from the main series with it's long, engaging story, interesting charathers, and pleanty of levels to clear and side stories to discover. Definately worth a playthrough!
Portal:
Puzzles, puzzles, puzzles. This game is chock full of them. What more can I say?
Splatoon/Splatoon 2:
I usually don't like first-person shooters but this is the one colorful, squid-tastic exception. Both games are more or less the same in terms of their story modes, though Splatoon 2 introduces the Octo Expansion, which adds another story mode that I rather enjoyed.
Pokemon: Sword
Okay, not really my favorite main Pokemon title (That honor goes to SoulSilver), but I wanna talk about your rival in this game. Hop is one of those friendly rivals, and while I usually prefer the jerk rivals, Hop's charather is so well written compared to every other rival I can't help but adore him and feel bad when my Cinderace kicks his Thwakey's poor tail.
Also I think one of the composers may have somthing to do with the whole "feeling bad for playing the game like you normally would". |
