Lys acknowledged Thea's comment with a nod.
"And may we come back alive," she said, her lips twisting in a morbid, cynical simle. They both knew full well the Blood Rite was designed to weed out the weak and let the strong live on, and that usually only half of all trialtakers came back.
Several Ksaraji came forward with horses and brought them to stand before each of the sixteen-year-olds. Lys's mount was a blue roan stallion with a black mane and tail. He pranced in place, as full of restless energy as Lys herself was. She vaulted into the saddle, checking to make sure her sword, waterskin, and other supplies were all there. Of course, she would be forbidden to bring anything except the most basic, standard clothes into the Caldera, but the road there was plagued by highwaymen, and as they were headed to the Trial, it was unlikely the other Clans would try to stop them but the possibility was almost there.
Lys kicked her heels into her horse's side. He took off at a brisk trot, and Lys sensed more than saw the others fall into the arrow formation drilled into them for as long as they could remember behind her.
She hoped no one would try to talk to her. If she was riding to her death, she wanted to do it in the silence and solitude of nature, watching the trees and running brooks and wild animals.

Thea nodded, her expression still and hard, as if cut from stone.
As their horses were placed in front of them Thea swung up onto her dark red roan stallion with a black mane and tail. A dark line running down his back under the supple saddle already laden with her supplies.
As they started off at a steady pace, in formation, she could feel her stallion trying to pull forward but she held him in check. She didnt like boring rides anyway.
She wasnt afraid of the Caldera, she felt she was ready, though if she were to be truthful, there was a bit of unease writhing in her stomach.
She not only had expectations for herself, from from others, ones she knew she must meet.
As she looked around at the other young warriors around her she at least was greatful that the Blood Rite was a test of strength.
As long as she didnt have to get chummy and deep with anybody she could survive. She was a warrior, and she would die or survive as one.
(I dont think I should start another clams going off, or should I?))

There's Clan Tazil, the rukh riders, Clan Taurin, the Ravenclaws (for lack of a better term) and Clan Ksaraji, the warriors, but what about the ones formerly named Daelynn and Vardenna? Might keep Dae but definitely not Vardenna.
