Your question has been sorta answered already, but here's a bit more of a detailed breakdown regarding the scale shop eggs and their worth.
Pets that can be obtained via the scale shop are:
Aurleon, Bulbori, Draeyl, Faelora, Luffox, Lupora, Morkko, Nytekrie, Qitari, Sylvorpa, Vulnx, and Zolnixi
As stated, eggs that are 1900+ scales are legendary and these are the only eggs that are worth keeping an eye out for. 2200+ eggs are usually 2-vis 2 carry and 2400+ eggs are 3-Vis. The colors, traits, and species are randomly generated. All eggs purchased from the scale shop are considered "tamed", meaning they can be mutated.
Aside from rarely hatching from found eggs from the third zone, the Lost Grove or festival zones, the only other way to get these pets is to catch them with a masterful snare trap, which costs 500 diamonds in the diamond shop(300 diamonds when they're on sale), or hope you get one easily by trapping with lesser snares in the Lost Grove before they decimate your team. xD
With all that being laid out:
"Is it a hit and miss kind of thing?"
Yes and no. Yes, because you might pick up an egg that is not highly sought after with all the variables given or you might find an absolutely gorgeous pet. No, because so long as you stick to buying eggs that are 1900+ scales, it is still a legendary pet and they are very hard to come by in the wild. Even if it's not a highly sought after species or has abysmal traits, it's most likely still worth something. It really just comes down to finding the right buyer. ;) Or, you can always keep it and try to doll it up yourself.
