The current one I'm in is actually a setting heavily based on Final Fantasy's general lore, which is pretty exciting. It's even got rules for using material and limit breaks. I think it'll be a fun setting to try out! I'd love to hear more about yours too, especially about the paradoxes. :P

I think mine is probably either Forgotten Realms or maybe Planescape. I also have a fondness for Ravenloft, but it's really hard to find people who play in that setting that let you really have fun. It's a hard setting to balance fun and theme since it's so bleak, but it's so cool to read about. I'm also kind of a newbie when it comes to D&D specifically since most of my tabletop experience actually comes from Pathfinder...

And that's cool! I'll have to look into it, later on, once my college semester stops punching me in the throat.

I don't know a lot about Final Fantasy Lore (I've played to some of the games, a loooong time ago, but not to all of them), but it sounds like an interesting setting for a RPG.

What paradoxes? You mean between the funny things in the serious things, or the high fantasy and sci-fi?

The names of the places to the characters we encounter, are quite comical (there are puns in names, characters are parody of characters in famous movies/books etc), all our characters have quirks, so we are laughing half of the time, but behind this, the plot of our campaigns is quite serious.
During the last campaign, someone managed to take the control of our country using political intrigues, poisoning the most important members of the governments and the national heroes of our country, and convincing the population that he was a good guy trying to stop the people who commited these crime.
During the campaign, we discovered what he had done. Of course when the population understand that this man is a tyrant, it was too late and he was already in control of everything.
It also turned out that he was an Alien, coming from another planet without magic but with very advanced technology. He came to our planet because he wanted to master magic so he would be invincible in his own world. He was planning to destroy completely our planet after (so nobody else from his world could ever learn magic there in order to defeat him).
He knew about our planet due to the fact than more than two millennia before, people from his planet had tried to colonize our planet, but had to renounce to control it as they had realized that the two world were too conflicting and could not be control by the same government. It was a known part of the history, still i their archives. In our world almost everyone as forgotten about this (except for the oldests of the oldests of the elves who were young when the colonizers left), but some of these peoples from space had entered the legends of our world as heroes and gods. We managed to travel to this planet with a very old spaceship, and to make an alliance with its inhabitants as they were concerned too. It turned out that the planet the colonizers / invaders came from was Earth (real Earth) in the future.

Our campaign actually takes place at the same time as these events, but we are playing the resistance. People who have not left the world to find help else elsewhere, but who are trying to oppose against him from inside while he is in control. So the atmosphere will be quite dark. Imagine World War II resistance in a Fantasy world ^^ with weird characters with stupid names
(I'm one of the only one who was part of the first campaign, so most players still don't know about the sci-fi part of it)

(Long story, isn't it? and there's not all the details XD)

Pathfinders was better than the previous edition of D&D at least for my tastes (4th edition was almost a wargame, witth not less place for rp...). I like Planescape too =)
I've never played in Ravenloft, I looked it up, it looks quite dark, so quite interesting!

I have played to lot of other tabletop RPG too. Mostly:
- Malfices (which doesn't exist in English I think), it's an RPG which takes place at the end of the 19st/beginning of the 20st, in our world, with some mystical elements, it's a bit dark and quite interesting. The scenarios can go from Sherlock Holmes style investigations with no magic to fantasy with angels and demons or mythical creatures.
- A RPG based on LOTR and its universe
- Call of Cthulhu, an horror RPG inspired by the universe and stories of Lovecraft

Ahh, I didn't expect so many people to reply to this, especially to offer pets. You're all so nice!!

Enyo, I have to agree with you about 4th edition. I've heard the newest version of D&D is improved, and I have some of the books, but I haven't sat down to read it much. I've also got a lot of the new World of Darkness books that I want to try out one day, but I need to get a story together before I can even consider doing that.

Paleblood, is it okay if I just get an egg from these two?

I was almost going to say that I didn't know World of Darkness, but after I googled it I have realized that Vampire: The Masquerade is a part of it, and I've heard of this one a lot before. I would be very interested by trying it!
Yes the 5th edition is way better than the 4th if you are like me and enjoy the roleplay aspect of the game.

The community is really nice here, there are always giveaways, contests, etc.^^ There are many threads where newbies can get free stuffs over the forum, you should check^^

Somehow, I'm unsurprised I picked the siblings by mistake... @_@ I really need to read before I pick!
I made sure to check this time, though. A + B

And yeah, most people know it for Vampire. The newer version is a bit contentious, since it took out all of the lore and story behind the original and made it a lot more focused on letting the GM make whatever story they wanted... but it also made a rule system that a lot easier to understand and use between each book series (so you could have vampires and werewolves and humans and fae all in the same game without combining rules that only complicated things). Also, from what I've heard, it's not difficult to just use the lore from the older books while having the newer rulings as well, so it's not much of an issue.

The only issue I have with playing it is since it's supposed to be a dark and gritty game, I get nervous playing it with strangers. Some people I've met who play it are a bit... too serious.
