Just my two cents:

You should all read up on what is going on further. If you are worried go to change.org sign the petition to put a stop to it. There are already Senator's that are writing up documents to challenge the result.

As Krin stated, this is something that will NOT happen over night. This is going to take a long time. There are always things you can do. Does one person make a change? No but adding your voice to where it matters can.

Be proactive but don't freak out.

Like I said, steps are already being taken. Look online, go to your social media pages, find a way to contact those in your state and or district that represent you.

Anyway. Like I said just my 2 cents.

I think it would be pretty messed up if the fate of the internet in America rested on 5 people at the FCC! I heard on Youtube there's been polls that say 83% of the American population is against repealing Net Neutrality regulations. Its not democratic and the fight isn't over yet.

Well, it went through, and oh boy the greed. They repealed it. But I am very greatful that everyone took time to discuss it, and even one of our mods reassured me. Thanks everyone.

Also, I kinda think they might change it back, because 83% of america disagrees, and based on reasoning for some things, it's possible fighting could start. So my guess is that they will try to fix it up so that it wouldn't be quite as bad in the end.

Please read! :

The repealing of net neutrality is not what most people on social media depict it to be. They think it's going to make the internet a dystopian place where you have to pay to read a post or something.

This is not really true.

Repealing net neutrality actually just means that all companies will have to pay money to internet providers so that their websites may continue. The larger companies like google, yahoo, facebook, verizon and others, are going to continue operating on as normal. However, the smaller companies will be affected the most because they cannot afford to pay the internet providers and may have to stop all together.

So what does this actually mean?
It means that larger companies will run faster and be easier to use, because they can buy the fast lane
The smaller companies will run slower, and their websites will be harder to use, since they use the slow lane

So basically... Since the repeal passed:
The internet is going to turn into a competition for larger companies, weeding out the smaller ones, making it hard for start ups to get off the ground. The business term for this is an oligopoly.

Examples of existing oligopolies include: the auto industry, the airline industry, the entertainment industry and so on.

I hope I shed some light on some things! Repealing net neutrality isn't as dramatic as everyone makes it out to be.

Sorry.

Is this in Canada?

It sounds like it's only in United States.

@Sketched

well it really depends. It affects all companies based in the US. So if you use Google as you're search engine up in Canada (idk what you guys use) then yes, it's in Canada.
If the companies who websites you go on are based outside of the states I think all is still fair?

Scratch that
I don't know if Canada even has net neutrality laws in the first place that can be repealed? Since the US didn't until Obama, and it was fine. I think everyone's fine. It's fine. Don't worry. :)

Okay, thanks. You looked like you knew what you were talking about.

I'm just so scared that it's going to open up so many money making hacking sites...

No, that's not likely to happen. That's what everyone makes it out to be, but it's really not that interesting. Social media has blown it up to the giant dystopian outlook to the future. But in reality there isn't much to worry about.

a, it's going to take a while to actually be able to see any changes at all, likely years
b, net neutrality used to not exist, and people were fine, so I don't see why not in the coming years.

:) Have a great evening!

The only site that will possibly be blocked is BitTorrent by the Comcast Internet provider. They blocked BitTorrent completely and that is actual the main reason why Net Neutrality was put in place sothat internet providers can't block sites
