Dogs came from wolves, but does a Chihuahua in any way resemble being the same species as a wolf to you anymore? Thousands of years of evolution creates new species. When man intervenes and creates that species themselves, that species no longer has any native domain, because it was shaped by people, for people. Cats and dogs did not evolve to an ecosystem around them. They evolved to life with humans, giving them no real native environment.

Cats have not physically changes as much as dogs have from their original source, but that does not mean that you should take Fluffy out into the African desert and expect Fluffy to do well there, because Fluffy's ancestor species did.

Cats are also in no danger of becoming 'endangered' as we have cat shows, purebreds, pedigrees, catteries, and a massive industry all revolving around purebred cats, which are not spayed or neutered, and instead selectively bred.
