I am full of holes but I can still hold water.

What am I?

A sponge?

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

Dark!

This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.

Time!

Alive without breath,
as cold as death,
Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail but never clinking.

Fish.

I can only live where there is light, but I die if the light shines on me. What am I?

A shadow.

What has a mouth but does not eat,
Is always running but has no feet,
And has a bed but never sleeps?

A river.

Many have heard me, but nobody has seen me, and I will not speak back until spoken to.
What am I?

An echo!

The farther you are, the closer you get,
The closer you come, the smaller I am,
Eyes cannot see me, though devices can sense me,
And the more you run from me, the larger I become.

I don't know. What is it?

When you walk into it, it grows smaller, but when you run from it, it grows.
