I hate my name, actually. It's really common, but my birth parents decided to do the thing where you change the spelling to make it ~unique~.

I'm trying to switch to my middle name, it's actually way cooler and more representive of me? Of course, getting people to suddenly call you a different name at 22 is hard...

I like using AJ online though bc it's mostly gender neutral, i don't have to be pressured into fitting expectations of other people. Folks make assumptions based on my interests or behavior, but i don't mind, it's kinda interesting to see how others perceive me! I'm tempted to use it in real life too, but i dunno yet.

My name is pretty normal, on American standards. I wasn't made fun of for it, and I rarely met anyone with the same name (usually, they were adults that I knew by extension).

I never wanted to change it. If anything, my sister had two names, and I liked both of them, and I kinda was a little jealous that she had pretty names aha. But it caused her some complications (having long names does correlate with being held up in the TSA line, apparently, and her name was so long that it didn't fit on official certificates without being truncated), so she ultimately removed one and kept the other.

But I don't have these experiences. ;u;
Reading the others' experiences makes me worry that I'll choose a bad name for my future child aha. (If I have one!)
I would think to try and pick a relatively simple, but not common name...but when naming my child, the last thing I'd want them to feel is anxiety because of it.

As long as you don't try too hard to be unique, or name your kid after a month or fruit. Avoid unique spellings, unless you are of a culture that has a different traditional spelling. Also? Do nooottt name your kid after a fictional character like Ganondorf or Sephiroth, people have actually done that and i beg you on their behalf, do not do it. (Ones like Zelda or Genesis are actually way better, they're normal names that are a bit more unique. See also: Logan for Wolverine, like my poor brother.)

That said, be sure to raise them not to make fun of others' names! And give them a middle name to fall back on in case they're not happy with their first name. You never know what kind of personality your kid will have, and you named them as a small chubby, not a grown adult with their own tastes, so it's okay if they feel it doesn't fit them? It's no one's fault.

Unless you named them Ganondorf. Good god. Don't do it.

Edit: i say no fruit/month because i've commiserated with people who have 'em. Also 'poor' brother because he suffers a character name that me and his twin escaped lmao

My middle name is a month and I love it. I was born in November.

Months are ok for middle names (unless it's the one they were born in)

I've known several people named April and January that absolutely hate it, but clearly there's always exceptions!

Imagine being named March...glad mine came up with something ahead of time!

April is almost ok but January?!? That's just child abuse. (I mean no offence. It's a figure of speach.)
