That has happened to me!!! There was a rare Bulbori that refused my traps though it was SOOOOOOOOOOO cute!!!!! I gave up and killed it, and apparently it gave me a bulbori essence! I forgot what it looked like though o3o

I've found that capturing sylesties is very much like catching poke'mon. The lower their health, the better. The lower their level compared to yours, the better. Many are trolls (not literally, figuratively) and take ridiculous amounts of poke'balls/nets just to run away or faint.
There are a few differences (poke'balls aren't quite as expensive as nets, and status changes don't seem to affect capture), but for the most part I've found they're the same.
