How to get shinies?
Either really good luck or patience.
Basically, you can find them in the wild and by breeding, and there's items and methods to increase the probability.
For the wild, you can chain, which is essentially a very complex method that got much, much easier for XY and even easier with ORAS. You basically encounter the same pokemon till a shiny appears, because a chain of encounters increases the probability with each link. The chance is already higher in XY Safari Zones. You can also work on finding Hordes, since they're more likely to have a shiny because there's a lot of them at once.
For breeding, there's the glorious Masuda method, named after the guy who coded the trick. Basically, get two pokemon each from a different country. Most people get a foreign Ditto and breed with their own pokemon. It can take anywhere from 3 eggs to a week's worth of eggs--i've had both. It's my preferred method, to be honest, it doesn't require as much concentration, i can watch TV while i do it. Plus breeding is easier in gen V.
Then there's the shiny charm. If you fill your national pokedex, you recieve the charm from the game's professor. It increases your probability of finding a shiny both in the wild AND from breeding, in addition to the other methods.
I personally got a glorious perfect stat italian Ditto off of WonderTrade, so i can pop out near perfect shinies whenever i so wish to work on it.
I'v gotten...Noivern, Ninetales(with Drought!), Ponyta, Serperior(with Contrary!), Eevee, and...i think there was another, from breeding. Hoppip, Azumarill from random encounters, and Shedinja/Ninjask and Bulbasaur from Wondertrade. Oh, and Gengar and Rayquaza from event distribution.

Breeding has a couple of new mechanics in gen 6, smogon compiled a list with explanations if you wanna check that out. It's...much easier now, XD
Plus the trick in XY of putting a coin under your circle pad to keep yourself going around the Prism Tower while you do something else...it's nice, hehe

We have all the main games from DPP onward (and Colliseum and XD), though we've been playing since we were just a very small thing and I don't think GS were even out. (We were introduced to pokemon via emulator. I don't think we even really knew about actual gameboys, back when we started? We still use them, for gens I-III. Emulators have the benefit that you can have many saves. I use them to do Challenges, though, these days)
I remember that when we went over to a particular friend's house we were always very enthusiastic to play/ watch them play Pokemon Snap (I demand 3ds remake, go go go Nintendo.)
At the moment we've mostly just been screwing around in AS because the next plot point is Meteor Falls and the inclusion of Your Rival, The Giant Neon Flashing Sign Pointing Towards Plot put us off.
So instead we've won every single contest to Master Rank. Had a pokemon become a Contest Star. Raised a bunch of pokemon a lot. Farmed berries, too.
(Why did they make the Team kidnap Prof. Cozmo? In RSE they just basically asked him to show them Meteor Falls politely then made off with the meteorite and he was like "???? but why?")
... ORAS has finally given us a reason to try to see all the pokemon, though, with the new Pokedex size scrolly list thing. I think we'll raise a zubat to crobat today to add golbat and crobat's sizes.
But I will tell you what. We have a major Grinding Problem.
We can't stop.
We won't list our shinies here, though, because we've already gone on for a while.

/bringin this back because I recently learned some things
Friend codes have to be entered in the DS home menu. On the top of the touch screen there are a bunch of (5) little icons. The one with the cute lil smiley called Friend List is the one we want for friend code shenanigans.
From there you can enter a new one and find your own :O mine is 2552-4257-8008
As I understand it, both people have to enter the other's friend code before they can be added as friends.
Also: I have been very excited about the friend safari lately, and also recently learned my pokemon!! My safari is the ice type, and has Snorunt, Bergmite, and Cloyster in it.
