Well, for starters, look here. And secondly, if you do not want your pets to be released, don't sell them in the first place. You got the gold, they got the pet. After they buy it, it belongs to them, and they are able to do what they like with that pet.
I don't mean to sound crass but if I wanted to release the pets, I would've done so myself. I'm not emotionally invested to the point I won't release undesirable fuzz/scale/feather balls.
I also even disclaimed that at the end of the day, it's theirs to do as they please in my OP. I can still be disappointed about that they were just released though, no?

This has been a debated issue for some time and pretty much everyone's opinion here is valid.
It really just comes down to whether or not you want to risk having a pet insta-released if you put it up for sale. Most of the time, no, it's not really a big issue. Sometimes a player will go through and buy up a bunch of cheap pets to release. But it's fairly isolated.
My best suggestion is that if there is a pet you don't want to be insta-released, then try selling it on the forums or doing a giveaway where only new players can participate (or whatever your criteria is).
And also, as stated, for the next few weeks I'd expect any pet under a few thousand gold to be bought and insta released. We do have a pet overpopulation issue and this was our idea to help reduce it some.
Going to go ahead and lock this thread because I think the question's already been answered.
