I'm debating if I should make a 3rd character to be the motherly figure of the 20 and younger people...

I for one could never juggle more than one character. In fact, I never learned to juggle. Which means I can never run away and join the circus. That aside, I think if you can handle more than two characters, go for it! Variety is the spice of pie, er, life.
