"The system was created so that if you go to view a pet, it's assumed that you'll open the link in a new tab (either hold down 'ctrl' and click or right-click and open in new tab)."
If that is the case, why not force the pets to be opened in new tabs like with the parents of pets? For me at least, having to right or ctrl click is a bit of a hassle, 'cause I never do it and will always forget, and my other hand isn't usually at the keyboard unless I'm typing.. On top of that, I, like many other sylestians, have multiple sylestia tabs open at a time, along with maaaaany other tabs. At the moment I have 6 sylestia tabs, 2 chickensmoothie tabs, google maps, 2 tumblr, the weather (I work outside, so that's an important one!), 2 emails, and Groupon open in tabs. Adding more can become irritating when you can no longer even read the tabs or all the x's are so close together that it's easy to accidentally click the wrong one.
I don't really know much about web development, but maybe there's a way to at least navigate to a specific stable and/or tab through the url or something? I saw it done once with the hatchery where someone created a link to a specific page by adding something to the url, though I don't remember what it was. If it's possible to temporarily save off the current stable/tab whenever it changes, then maybe you could add a 'back to stable' or 'back to hatchery' button? That would be incredibly useful for looking at pets's details then returning to where you were, or for releasing pets, so you could go back to the location where they were and continue your checking/releasing from the same spot.
Or, if each pet knows it's location in the stable/hatchery, the button could be added based on that, though it wouldn't really work for releasing pets because that information would have changed. (like with releasing hatchery pets, the 'next hatchery pet' button is useless once they're released because they are no longer in your hatchery).

I don't know about anyone else, but I tried the right clicking thing....it brings my pet's image up in a small little window on the left side of my computer, but I can't DO anything with it. I honestly wish the system would change. This is the only site I'm on where if I'm in another barn and click the back button I end up all the way back in my first barn, have to go to the drop down menu again, find the right barn again, click it again, go to the right page again...and God forbid I have to do anything with another pet, then I have to deal with the whole hassle all over again. It's a royal pain in the arse.. >_<

You have to click on the name of the pet, not the picture :) Also, as Krin mentioned, you can hit the ctrl button and click and it'll open a new window.
But if you're not in the habit of opening links in new tabs, then going through the whole process is quite tedious.

I always try to open pets in new tabs. However, I'll sometimes accidentally right-click right next the hatchling's name instead of on it and just out of habit click back [which takes the place of Open in a new tab when something that isn't a link is clicked.]
