Ajal didn't want to or need to stop it; he wanted to deflect it into the creek behind them. Ajal waited until the right second then deflects Sonic off one of his knives in the direction of the creek.

Sonic held onto Clay probably a bit tighter than what was nessecary, quills quivering under the stress.
