Desta speeds up to a slow run as she follows the scratch marks back to the steps.

He's right beside her, easily keeping pace.

Eventually they reach the steps, "Go up first I'll be right behind you."

He quickly bounded up the steps since he could see. He held the candle out, hoping to help Desta see

Desta races up the steps not willing to risk a glance backward, "Snuff the candle out and run!" She could feel that awful sense creeping up her spine.

He did so, not bothering to lick his fingers beforehand. He waited for Desta to go first before he sprinted after her

Desta flat out sprinted towards the first floor. She keeps the pace up until she finds a window which she throws her bag through.
